Author Distro for multimedia work?

Would any one recommend a distribution for working with video / audio files?

Specifically DVD --> avi --> DVD or MPEG2 -->other format --> mpeg2
A video editing suit would be nice. I'm not worried about deCss or other
copy protection stuff just working with video and different streams.

X / GUI is not even important here.

I read about a snazzy sounding video editor for linux that was coming along
well, can't remember where though. But I don't think the specific distro
matters too much, as long as your comfortable using it, and it supports
good video playback...

Thanks for you help.

I'm not worried about playback more file conversion / compilation. I want it
to do over-night / long batch jobs while I continue working on my main
computer. I have used FlaskMpeg for windows and If I can find the Linux
version I will use that for most mpeg2 conversion work. I was needing a
stable distro though.

I was thinking of using a LFS base and getting the libraries and programs I
need from there. But this is a lot of work and can get messy quickly with my
knowledge of Linux video editing tools.

I need Ideas on what tools would / could be useful or websites that could
give info on video projects in Linux.

Just in the middle of a 6 hour video conversion job as we speak.

I am a complete newbie when it comes to video, so bare that in mind.
Some good command line video conversion utilities are:

mjpegtools: mjpeg.sourceforge.net/
mencoder: www.mplayerhq.hu/homepage/
dvgrab/kino: www.schirmacher.de/arne/kino/index_e.html (make sure you
get the latest cvs versions - kino is a gui editor)

There will be a few libraries required to compile these, but that info
will be on the sites.

mjpegtools runs using pipes and redirections from the command line, so
it should be able to be worked into bash scripts for batch processing.
