Author /etc/skel.... default gnome desktop icons?

I'm trying to setup a default profile for users of a system - I've created
a .gnome-desktop directory and copied over the links I want everyone to
have... but this doesn't store the icon positions, only the icons
themselves. So when users login they are presented with a whole list of
icons unordered and in an ugly list.

Digging around, I notice that these icons' positions (i'm using Gnome2 on
RH8 by the way) are stored in ~/.nautilus/metafiles/ ... but in a file
that has a weird name and can't be used as a skeleton (not least because
the username is within the filename itself so is not generic enough).

Any ideas how this is done? Can I rename the file as something else which
would be looked for on first logon by gnome? Or is there a better way of
making system-wide desktop icons?

Thanks,

Terence Parker
