Linux slowness on a Athlon 1700+
|
|
|
| Recently I bought a new computer a Athlon XP 1700+ (1.46 Ghz).
With 512MB of DDR 2100 DDR SDRAM. So its safe to say its fast.
But however when using it in Linux with the current stable release of
Xfree, my computer is just over all slow. My mouse times out, so
instead of using it in the UBS I switched it to the PSAUX port. This
happens when I'm compiling stuff from souce, such as the kernel, apps
for X, apps for a shell and so on. I'm just wondering why I'm
experincing these unwanted effects. This is such a major turn off for
using Linux as a Desktop system. Do I need to tweak or set certian
features in my kernel or what?
If you have any suggestions please let me know.

I guess it is in reality your IDE hd, you perhaps need to tweek settings
'man hdparm' dma/udma/piomode/whatelse, I don't use IDE much. Another
way could be renicing X to -10. 'man renice' or use top.
Good luck

| strange, got the same basic setup with Mandrake 9.0
and it flies, slows down a bit when ripping MP3's but otherwise I am as
happy as a pig in shit with it. What type of graphic card do you use?
that can be a bottleneck on a fast system

Yup your right!! something is very wrong!
As the other guy said maybe your harddrive?
Enable dma and check if things improve.
Are you using the correct drivers for your video card? What card?
Do you have acceleration?
USB shouldn't be a problem.
Run top and press C. Check whats eating the cpu?
