8 machine, selected the drivers ati drom x all looks fine nice pretty colors
etc, but when I try to play Tux Racer colour has gone he is just white.

Yes, a lot of people have. As a matter of fact, it's nr. 7 in the
technical section of the FAQ at http://www.tuxracer.com/

"I have an ATI card and everything looks white, how do I fix it?"
See http://www.tuxracer.com/index.php?page=faq.php

I wish I could use the comercial version I bought many moons ago. I can
play the free one just fine, but the bought version bails on not finding a
GLX server running. I can play Q3A and RTCW (and the free version of
TuxRacer) just fine...

There's no updates that I've noticed...

(on MDK or Gentoo with the proper nVidai drivers for my TNT2 card
installed and running 100% fine...)

P.S.
Yes, the Win* version of the comercial version works fine. :-\
