Hello,
I've been installing the Red Hat 8.0 for 3 times now and I was only able to
boot once in it. In the rest I only receive the following message at boot
time:

VFS: Cant't find ext3 file system on dev 0(3,9)
mount: error 22 mounting ext 3
pivotroot: pivot-root (/sys root,/sysroot/init vd) failed: 2
unmount /initrd/proc failed: 2

How could I possibly sort it out?
For partitionong I was using once Partition Magic 7/8 and second time Disk
Druid.
Also, after Linux install Drive Image 2002 found some errors in the
partition table. Something about LBA and CHS didint match.
Please be aware I'm a very bigginer in Linux. Just graphical interface.

Many thanks,
Peter

My config in this order:

3 primary partitions with windows 98 on them
EXTENDED:
1 swap linux 500MB
1 logical with windows xp
1 boot linux 100MB
1 / linux 3GB
1 FAT logical

Try a simpler installation -- much simpler.

There's the problem. Do not use these tools. Instead, if possible erase
the entire drive and allow the Red Hat installation procedure choose its
own partitions.

Yep. See above. Erase the entire drive if this is feasible.

Okay, I get it. The simple solution is to buy a different machine for
Linux. Obviously this HDD is entirely hosed, and will never allow an
installation until it is ... how shall I say this? ... "cleaned up".

This is from the install CD? I ran into similar errors a while back and it
turned out my CDs were bad. If you download ISO images and burn them to CDs
yourself, be sure to verify the MD5SUM. That turned out to be the problem
in my case - the ISOs had some mild corruption and would boot up but fail
partway through the install process. Had to try the download 2-3 times
before the checksums came out right. As I recall, RH 8.0 offers you the
opportunity to verify your installation media pretty early in the install
process. Did your CDs pass that test?

Cheers,

Brian

No, I didn't pass the test. I thought it is not that important. I actually
have the CDs bought with a magazine. I spent 3$ on them. Should I probably
ask them for other CDs?

It went through now, with the same CDs. With some LBA to CHS errors detected
afterwards and corrected by Drive Image 6. Seems to be OK now.

I finally made it.
I first repartitioned with Partition Magic 8 hada7 /boot ext2, hda8 / ext2,
hda9 SWAP. I offered a bit more space for swap and put the Linux partitions
in order. I installed Linux . Then I went back to Windows and rechecked the
LBA to CHS errors and corrected them. I even made an image of it with Drive
Image 6. For the moment everything seems to be OK.
