Author Help w/Bouncing mail & Sender Domain

I've created/adapted a procmail recipe to bounce messages with specific
keywords in the body of the message. Basically, while testing it, I find
that the entire process works to *some* recipients, but it appears that
the mail relay at other domains won't accept the message. I receive the
following:

.... while talking to smtp.newsguy.com. :[col
or=darkred]
>>> MAIL From:<root@geekboy.mark> SIZE=593
[/color]
<<< 501 <root@geekboy.mark>... Sender domain must exist
501 5.6.0 Data format error

FWIW, other destinations/recipients accept the bounced mail just fine as is.

I have tried adding masquerading features to sendmail, entries in the
/etc/hosts file, and just about everything else I could find in *way*
too many hours of Google searching last night. I'm pulling my hair out
in a hurry here. Is there a single, definitive way to overcome this?
I'll add that I am running samba and have a WIN98SE machine connected
via a router. Whatever I do, I'd like to try to avoid mucking around
with anything that will break the connectivity there. Many thanks.

You're not in their DNS. Or at least you're claiming to be mailing from a
machine that isn't in their DNS.

Then they shouldn't.

Presuming, you mean you are bouncing SPAM, you shouldn't, just drop them
to /dev/null.

smtp.newsguy.com, is well configured, it doesn't accept any mails, where
it can't even resolve the sender domain. It's a SPAM whole, if a MTA
allows forged From:.

That's correct. I was hoping there would be a way to have a bounced
messages header origins appear just as a "normal" message (which I can
send to Newsguy w/no problems). In my particular case, I'm not actually
trying to bounce spam per se, but rather, messages from people I
actually know that contain spam-like content. Chain letters, and things
of that nature. I suppose it would be much easier to just tell them to
stop.

I'm beginning to understand. Newsguy runs a tight ship.

Thanks,

I actually do that with messages that are tagged by SpamAssassin as
spam. In this case, with these particular messages and procmail recipes,
I'm trying to bounce messages that originate from people I know, with a
gentle nudge to stop sending things like chain letters, multi-generation
forwards, etc.

Understood. I don't understand how the "from" that is created in my
bounced message differs from the "from" in a a first generation "normal"
message. I suppose I'd be better off just letting this go. Thanks for
your time, and the information.

root mail is not masqueraded. If you still want to do this, the solution
is simply to give your box a valid hostname that public DNS points at your
internet IP. But if that IP is not on your box, you will need to point it
at a local or loopback IP in /etc/hosts so your box can find itself.

I use free subdomain names from http://www.no-ip.com/ for my dynamic adsl.

Thanks. I could easily have spent many more hours pounding my head
against the wall.

Thanks very much. Considering the reason I wanted to do this, it all may
very well be more trouble than it's worth. The experience is worthwhile
though, so I'll probably end up going after it again. Thanks for the
information, and for saving me more headaches.
