Distributions for small pc

| Hello!
I need a distribution that will work (regard less performance...) on my
system :
Pentium 75, 8 MB RAM, floppy disk, pcmcia lan. (no cd-rom)
My idea is to have a working X window (maybe with black box) with StarOffice
Does anybody has some name?
Thanks!

X using someting like fvwm2, should work.
StarOffice? Forget about it, it needs about 48MB (5.2), just after
starting.

You may want to check out vector linux (www.vectorlinux.com <--- seems to
be dead. maybe it doesn't exist anymore??). You should forget about
StarOffice/OpenOffice as performance will be abysmal at best. Probably
take several hours of swapping just to get it to load with only 8megs of
ram. I'm not even sure you'll even get X to run at any usable speed with
8megs.
Command line interface performance would be acceptable though. (Emacs +
latex beats staroffice anyway )

| I have an old 386 that's running the current stable version of debian. Not
much on it other than X, blackbox, and ssh, but it works fine as an X
terminal. (Installed it recently to demonstrate running remote X sessions).
The system that you describe shouldn't have any trouble installing a minimal
Debian install.
Debian's installer doesn't hold your hand much, but if you've got some Linux
experience it makes it pretty easy to install a minimal system. If you can
get your NIC running during the install and have access to a high speed
internet connection, you can do the entire install over the net using 3
floppy disks.
You might also look at something like Peanut Linux, but I was never able to
figure out a way to install it without a CD drive.
Best wishes,
Brian

I doubt I could do it myself, but if you are able (or know womeone you
can turn to for help) this link may be of interest to you.

I had Slackware 7.1 installed on a 486/8meg ram with x. It was slow but it
worked as advertised. I could have trimmed it down a bit if I had tweaked on
it. There are hdparm tricks that can be applied to the hd to increase
performance if the hard drive/motherboard aren't to ancient. The beauty was
that they have a floppy install. Just download and install the sets you need.
You'll need "a" and "n" sets as a minimum......and a bunch of floppies.

Go to www.linux.org click on "distributions", in the search engine
select "Minimalist" in the field "Category". You will find the right
distro for such an old PC among the one listed. But you wont be able
to run Staroffice. It doesnt run on my P100 with 32megs Ram (well
actually it does run but it takes ages just to start, not to mention
if I try to load a doc with several pages...).
Bye
