| The only thing that keeps me from switching from Windows XP to Linux is
gaming. the 2 i mainly play are EverQuest and Counter-Strike, but i also
play things like quake 3.. ut2k3, etc., and most of themes games are not
available for linux.
it woudl be awesome if any of you could tell me if there is a way to play
thee games on linux, and plz dont tell me wine b/c all i was able to do with
it was run small apps like solitaire or wordpad. Thnx.

Going against your wishes, I'm going to tell you about wine. There's not
really any other way to play these games under Linux if they don't have a
native port. Stock wine (from winehq.com) does ok with games in my
experience, but winex from transgaming.com works much better and has
support, though that costs money. You can download it for free via CVS,
but, as with any CVS version, it may be in a broken state. I don't think
purchasing a prebuilt binary is expensive, and you get to take place in the
bugfixing process by telling the transgaming people which games work and
which don't (as well as bugs you encounter). Counter-strike I know runs
well under winex, and I'm not sure about EverQuest, but it's a popular
game, so it probably has decent support.

That said, there are Linux version out for (a small amount) of current
popular games.
I play Q3a, RTCW, Decent. All have native Linux binaries out. CS works
with WineX (and regular WINE, but I've only ever used WineX for it).
UT2003 has Linux Binaries out, but it only works on higher-end nVidia
cards (Mine's only a TNT2, and I can't play it :-( ). WineX does support
Everquest (I belive, it would be brutal on my vidcard and I'm only on 56k
at home, so I haven't looked into it much...), but I belive it works fine.
WineX also supports several other popular titles that may strike your
fancy (WC3, Sims, things like that). I wish it supported AOM, but that is
another thread (the intaller craps out half way though - yes, I've already
tried... :-( ).

|
| Quick look on my CD rack, Quake 3 Arena, Return to Castle Wolfenstein,
Decent 3, Dune 2k run fine on WineX I am sure Doom 3 will be supported by
ID RailroadTycoon...plenty stuff about, Oh yes, Warcraft3 is supposed to
run with WineX

What you will subscribe to is the possibility to download the latest
version of WineX. After the subscribing period ends, no more downloads.
That's it basically.
However, it sure is worth the $5 subscripting fee. WineX r00lz. :-)

The above two, plus Tribes II also work under Linux. I plan on
installing UT2K3 soon.
Many people mention they get significantly higher frame rates under
Linux compared to Windoz. I couldn't say as I had to sacrifice my
Windoz partition quite a few years ago.

Check out lokisoft. The company has bancrupted, but it is still
possible to get that software.
Oh, and BTW, ut2k3 was first put on Linux, and then on WinXXX.

Use Wine for gaming. Sorry, couldn't resist :-) I actually ran HalfLife
on Wine, and it ran just fine! Only network support was missing, which
was quite a bummer...

The thing I dislike about Transgaming is speed and loss of audio features.
For example with Diablo 2: No EAX/3D sound and choppy FPS on my P3 600
machine with Red Hat Linux 7.2.
I will stick with the native games like Q3A, RTCW, and UT2003.

How was the frame rate and did you have EAX sound support?

The framerate was eccellent. I didn't do any tests, but it was
as least as good as running on Windoze. I didn't test the EAX
sound either, sorry.

| The only way your playing counter strike or EQ in Linux is with WineX. I
hear many people are having success playing EQ with the latest release of
winex.
