Yes, unless you want to buy just the cds from cheapbytes.com
and read the install docs on the cd.
We are assuming you have about 4gig of free partion you can install
on a reasonably new machine.

It's a little old and a little buggy, as I recall. You can pick up the
latest version (9.0) from CheapBytes or Linux Emporium if you're willing to
pay the postage. The CDs themselves are inexpensive.

Mandrake is good, but 8.1 is one of the weaker versions. Mandrake 9.0 is
now shipping and most stores that offer Linux have Mandrake 8.2 in stock..
If you can get hold of the 8.2 version, leave the 8.1 on the shelf.
Ordinarily there isn't that much difference, but this time there was, IMO.

The boxed set comes with an instruction book that tells you pretty much
what you can get by clicking on the help icons, which is not really all
that much. There is, however, an included tutorial in the Mandrake distros
called the Rute document; Mandrake calls it "The Beginner's Guide to
Linux". It just might be the very best Linux tutorial now extant. Study
it as a curriculum and the chances are you'll wind up answering more
questions than you need to ask!!

Did you ever use an old PC that ran DOS, where you had to type in commands
at the prompt? If you could do that, you are good to go learning Linux!
Have fun with it, and welcome to the Penguin!!

The majority of distro's have a free download. The best newbie distro is
Lycoris.

This is questionably a stoning offence.

The best newbie distro is either Debian or Slackware

The best windows look-a-like distro is Mandrake

The worst two distro's fullstop are Lindows and Lycoris.

Looking my the libraries in the nearest two towns to me I found eight
distributions of linux. If you have a writer, go and have a look and
get a copy of one (assuming you library also has them).
Just put one on and try it, if nothing else you'll have a lot of
question and an idea of which one to buy (or if you have broadband
download).
