Is /proc/cpuinfo dependent on what type of CPU you have compiled into
the kernel or does it spit out the actual CPU type no matter what???

Also where do Celeron's move from registering as
Pentium III / Celeron (Coppermine)
to
Pentium 4 / Celeron (Williamette) ???

There are compile time options that you can choose
from menuconfig .. I've never paid much attention to them myself.
So does the blank install and a rebuilt kernel ( or udated kernel ) show
differently ?
My guess is the version/revision register on the processor
that is read during boot. Newer kernels may have a little more
smarts to figure out the finers details of which is which.
