Author Printing / Scanning -- Tweaks.

Well I think i've had a rather succesful day

Firstly I got printing working on my Gentoo system (finally), its
only take a month of waiting for a working cups version and a good
foomatic ebuild. But im happy now that it works....
Q: Is there a way to make cups print with more detail?
Ive tried putting the resolution up and tried manually printing at
a higher resolution, but it still comes out light and slightly
grainy (printer is a Canon BJC 210 using gimp-print driver).

Secondly I pulled the old chunky mustek 600 III EP Plus scanner out
of the cupboard hooked it up to the parallel port, recompiled my
kernel for parport support, installed sane and saned, and started
scanning, its working fine... but only from root!
Q: How do I get sane to scan as a user so I can use the gimp and
OpenOffice plugins?
Have got the appropriate lines set for xinetd and have run saned,
have tried manually specifing the device, and have read the man
pages for saned, sane-mustek_pp and scanimage -- all the things
they suggest I have done, but it the scanner is still 'undetected'
to a user. (scanner is connected to /dev/lp0 permissions 777)
