| Hi,
I was just wondering if you could help a newb like myself choose which Linux
to choose, the new Mandrake or the new RedHat.
I will be using it for a couple of games, some business related stuff, and
as a full web server(web based email, dns, and so forth.). I need the
strongest possible OS, security and memory saving wise since I use a lot for
a lot of different applications.
I have a P4, 2 ghz, 512 ram...
Anyway I am new to linux, so I need the one that is the the easier of two to
begin on, but holds up in power and so forth. I don't care how much space it
takes up or anything like that.
Thank you in advance

| even I can make red hat work -- most of the time -- so that would be my recommendation. Also, there are plenty of white papers online to help you when/if you have an issue with it... | |

| Both the most recent release's have "bugs" I would recommend actually
using either RH 7.3 or Mdk 8.2 for a while and just slowly upgrade to
a more current edition when the problems are weeded out.
IMHO you should also choose mandrake!
Why? Because I have something against Red Hat!
Well thats part of the reason the other more serious one is that Mdk was
a shoot off of Red Hat, and while both have developed independently since
that time I believe that the overall distro that is closer to Linux is
Mandrake, and that it (mdk) has some nifty little utilities that have been
developed to make it easy to use (RH does too but Mdk ones are better)...
NB. You asked for an oppinion you now have two. Both are different.

I'm not up to the current latest versions, but in the past my observations
have been that Mandrake is easier to setup and install while RedHat may be
more powerful, and certainly easier to find specific useful information. My
suggestion: partition your disk and try both of them.

You can goto to the redhat/mandrake.com site to see requirements.
~4 gig will hold you down for a while.
Buy both and see which one works for you.
http://cart.cheapbytes.com/cgi-bin/cart
under CheapBytes CDs (top left)
contains linux x86 Install cds for ~$2 each and up + shipping
Pink Tie is Redhat, RH would not let them use Redhat on the
inexpensive cds.
Redhat 7.x x86 install and doc cd
Linux Mandrake 8.x (GPL Version) (~$6)
For people accross the pond,
http://www.linuxemporium.co.uk
http://www.linux123.co.uk/
and for the down under fokes
http://www.lankum.com
Mandrake is based on Redhat, has more utilities, a much
better user friendly installer.
Pick custom/expert install if you do not want to wipe
your disk. Load cd and read the docs with your browser.
Install docs are on the Mandrake cd and readable via Micro$not.
For hardware compatibility
http://www.linux-mandrake.com/en/fhard.php3
http://www.redhat.com/corp/support/hardware/index.html
http://lhd.datapower.com
I get several people at work to go in on my credit card
and I get my shipping reduced to $1 a cd when we split
shipping.

This is more a question of which disto to choose and not linux. Linux
is the kernel and all distros use the linux kernel. With this in mind
what you need to do is peruse the Mandrake, Redhat and SUSE(this is a
great distro to) sites to see if they have the software included you
want. SUSE pro is very business, web etc geared whereas Mandrake is
user freindly for first time and inexperience users. It may or may not
do all you want. Redhat, well I just dont care for it but it is a good
distro.

Again Linux is the os the rest is just installation ease created by
the distro and software included.
security and memory saving wise since I use a lot for

Ease if install and power use are different so the easiest to put on a
machine may not fill your needs. Look at what you need, research the
distros offerings and get the one that fits the bill.
Good luck

| Personally I like Slackware but if I was you I would use SuSe and not
Mandrake or RedHat. I have had many problems with RedHat and have
heard many problems with Mandrake from alot of my friends. RedHat
constantly accessed my swap even though I had 256MB of DDR. It
accessed my swap so many times that my system seemed to freeze for at
least 30 min IF I was lucky. I was only running three or four programs
at a time that weren't heavy on resources.
In all seriuosness go with SuSe. Its much better. I've never heard of
any major problems with SuSe from any of my friends or other places
online.
If you are going to run a webserver don't forget to lock down the box
before you start getting alot of traffic. Black hat hackers can cause
you alot of problems. Buy or check out (from the library) some linux
security books. Give yourself alot of time to lock down the box. I am
currently building a server and a standard installation of almost any
distro is unsecure. The computer security heavily depends on what you
inpliment and not just the OS.
Anyways, good luck in your linux adventures.
