| Here's something different:
I've got a client the other day, who asks me if I can set up a system
wherein four or five monitors will be sitting side by side, and a
ticker-like message will scroll through all of them. I have to confess
that I'd honestly never thought of this particular application of
surplus monitors, but it *does* sound like something that Linux could
be told to do. Perhaps something using serial cables and 386s, with a
central server to write the messages to the various TTYs?
I'd appreciate any ideas.

Four 10M ISA NICs, a switch, and some cable won't cost you any more than
would four null modem cables and a serial card, and you'll be able to put
the kludge on the network. One of the 386s can be the 'server'.

Although I've never really looked into it, I believe Xinerama and 4 or 5
PCI video cards in, say, a Pentium class system could probably do the
trick. Make your virtual desktop stretch across the entire width of the
monitors and run your ticker tape.
