How on earth can a Microsoft newsreader be #2 in a Linux newsgroup?

Now that I think of it... maybe the people that can't get Linux to install
and ask for help here ;-)

And those posting from work, and those who are using a browser set to

Good point, although I hate seeing Linux users being counted as Internet
Explorer users. Really, I hate that. Sites that force me to identify as IE
lose me as a visitor. About the work computers: I'm just a smarta## who
simply installs Debian on his box even though the rest of the company is
working on Windoze ;-) It simply didn't cross my mind that someone could be
working at a company where that was not allowed / not possible. You know
what? I'd even refuse to work at a company like that. I know, that's easy
to say for someone who bulds webpages for a living (PHP and VIM are an
excellent couple ;-))

I'm one of those - Internet access from home costs AND is slow.
Broadband in .au is NOT cheap.

We even have complaints about that on our *internal* web pages here.

Sometimes there's little choice, particularly for work-related things.

It's both allowed and possible here, but not recommended. Unfortunately,
my current work stream involves finding defects (and/or the sources thereof)
in both embedded and Windoze applications that have been developed using
M$ VC.

Yes indeed. Being able to dictate job terms or change jobs easily - Luxury!
Try working in the telecomms industry for a while. :-(

Fortunately, my skills are broad enough to allow me to work in several
different
areas. Problem is, so are those of many of my (ex)colleagues who left this
field
before me.

Look at the message headers on your favorite regulars. You might be
surprised at who offers Linux expertise from Outlook Express, and top posts
as well.

Thx for your comment, thought I would be the only one, who would
refuse to work for any company, which wouldn't allow me to run

Cos of a co-up by my news source meant it was giving wrong error messages
when trying to post and so Mozilla was not prompting me for a uid/pw (they
use 'doze boxes) and so I was forced to use OE to post (for a while 'til a
solution was found).

Nope, me too. Still struggling though, cause said company employs

Perhaps, only a few poster are using pan, it just counts how many

Yup. =)

slrn kicks major XXX, whilst Knode is simply Krap.

For GUI-based newsreader, PAN still whoops Knode in several areas. =)

Umm, just for fun:

// TextGraph.java

public class TextGraph {

static String drawLine(double a, double scale)

double q = (1 + Math.cos(a * Math.PI)) * scale;
for(int i = 0; i < q;i++) {

}
return s.toString();
}

static void drawFunction()
{
final double scale = 20;
final double steps = 24;
for(double a = -1.0;a < 1.0;a += 1.0/steps) {
System.out.println(drawLine(a,scale));
}
}

public static void main(String[] args)

Actually I liked Pan, but I found it far from stable. Lots of random

The joke is on you. knode will never be powerful as that slrn.
It is obvious that you have no experience with slrn because if
you did then you would hear the voices of all laughing at you.

The gtk 1.x series *is* a bit on the flaky side, I'll admit.

Even the latest stable version (11.4) still likes to explode
occasionally for no apparent reason, not to mention the random lockups
that you described.

However, I've been experimenting with gtk 2.x lately, and although I
prefer to use a spartan WM (Blackbox), I wanted to see what all
the fuss was about in the 'new' Gtk, and so I've been playing with the
latest, stable gtk 2.x based pan. (13.1) for the last two weeks.

There's been some major changes between the two, not the least of which
is several magnitudes of stability.

While I completely concur with you that PAN is total bloat & overkill
for *text* groups (such as this one) it is very nice for binary groups.

I still use slrn for 'smaller' groups of binaries, but for large series
or amounts I still prefer to use Pan (13.1) =).

Oh, I hear voices alright. But the medications help.

Anyways, you dont have to tell me. If it werent for slrn, I
