| Hello
I am new to Linux. I just installed Mandrake 9.0 and was so happy with it
until this morning. Mandrake 9.0 is either buggy, the operator (me) is
buggy, or some combination of them both. I haven't given up on Mandrake
yet, but while I have access to someones broad band connection, I want to
download some Redhat ISO's and check it out.
I have a P4 1.6a, 512MB of RAM, Tyan Trinity 510 motherboard with the Via
P4X266 chipset, Radeon VE, and I/O Magic Hurricane Exstreme, and US Robotics
controller based PCI modem. I think these chipsets are at least a year old.
Is there any advantage to going to the slightly older Red Hat 7.3 instead of
8.0?
Thanks in advance

Yes. The actual question is "is there any advantage to going to the RH8.0?"
I do not play with x.0 distributions all that much because they have
something (what depends on the distro) new in them. That also means
they have not been shaken out near as well as their older brethern.
7.3 has been beat up by hackers, crackers, and ne'er do well's for a
while now
and the easy exploits have been found. There's no doubt in my mind that
there
will be more found, but the easy ones are already fixed.
Give 8.0 a few months before going to it. It'll be there when you
decide to change.
Until then, enjoy 7.3 and make sure you get the updates immediately.

Last I heard, 8.0 had some pretty annoying things - like absolutely no
support for MP3s due to patent concerns.
From a purely technical point of view, you're perfectly fine with 8.0. The
only really worthwhile new things in 8.0 would be gcc 3.2 and apache 2.0,
though.

Redhat 8 is much, much better for people new to linux. It is the only
distribution that my wife has actually liked to use. There are some
issues like the mp3 thing (fixable), but overall it is loads faster &
has great OpenOffice.org implementation (you can even use the UnixODBC
database). Plus it has some very easy to use Administration tools,
although they may be hard to find (open a console as root and type
redhat- and hit the tab a few times to see them all).
If you just want lots and lots of Opensource software, stick with
Mandrake 9 and setup a Contrib mirror under URPMI. Otherwise if you
just want a workstation with very poplular and stable OSS, use Redhat 8.

They seem to have finally resolved a lot of the crappy font issues that
people are always complaining about, but for my liking RH 8.0 has gone so
overboard with trying to be user-friendly that it has ended up being rather
unfriendly. It took me ages to figure out where they had hidden everything,
not to mention switching from Gnome to KDE. Anyway, I've shelved my copy of
RH 8.0 and am gonna go back to using 7.3 for the time being. 8.0 *did*
recognise my Audigy soundcard, though, which was nice. I still have to take
care of that one manually in 7.3. But life goes on.

Thanks everyone for your replies
I am still running Mandrake 9.0. I was the one with the bugs. Mandrake 9 is
fine. Maybe Ill try Redhat later. Or maybe even Slackware.

| Slackware 8.1 rules. It hardly changes from one distribution to the next,
which is a good thing, but the packages of course are newer.
Slackware 9.0 is not too far off, seems like yesterday I installed 8.1,
and it has been nothing but an enjoyable experience for me, unlike redhat.

| RH 8.0 has been awful for me, so much so that I ended up rolling those boxes back to 7.3
PERL was especially a problem for us. The other issue was that 8.0 was extremely unstable... |
