RTFM: man XF86Config, and man s3virge or man savage, depending on the
type of S3 chip (and assuming that you are talking about XFree 4.2.x).

I've got a savage4 card (i assume other s3 cards are in the same boat) and
while they work fine as a graphics card, 3d acceleration support (DRI?) is
non existant, sorry. I'm not much of a gamer, so it doesn't bother me
much, but it is something i would like to see supported.

I've used them. Setting them up is done through the XF86 Configuration
tools.
2d hardware acceleration is pretty much automatic.
for 3d acceleration, check www.xfree86.org. I don't think there is HW
3d accel for s3 boards, but I"m relying on memory.
