That's the sound of headers being checked, so there's no question as
to who is NOT sending certain messages. Such a refreshing sound, yes
it is...

I am currently experimenting with a Star Trek-like teleportation unit.
It's really great. It's tough maintaining flats in more than one
place, but just to see the crazy ways people on these newsgroups are
reacting to this... :-P
I am worried, though, because the power bill is gone through the roof,
and that usually flags one as a drug producer. I guess I should've
designed a unit to cancel power meter readings first. Sorry...gotta
go. There's a knock at the door...

| Hey there Tom,
I know this will sound odd... but these "headers" that you all keep
referring to... what exactly are you talking about?... does this enable you
guys to know where a message comes from?... are you using some sort of
reverse lookup program to tag an email to see where someone comes from?....
curious... and slightly confused... (I click on the Headers button on
Outlook Express... the screen blinks, and then just sits there looking at
me... don't really see any difference yet).

| Seth,
Right click on a message subject and choose properties, then select the
details tab. This is the message "header" information. In the listed
details you will find information on "where" the message originated. Here
is an example of what to look for in the message that you just posted:
X-Complaints-To: abuse@attbi.com
X-Trace: sccrnsc01 1026596046 12.224.120.80 (Sat, 13 Jul 2002 21:34:06 GMT)
NNTP-Posting-Date: Sat, 13 Jul 2002 21:34:06 GMT
Organization: AT&T Broadband
You can check this information against a "known good" message and determine
if the poster is real or an imposter.

Here is the perfect link to answer your question:

Start comparing message headers and you'll clearly see who the imposters
are.

No. That is where you are underestimating the abilities of the people
who post to, and the larger number who read, these newsgroups. These
are technicians and upcoming technicians-to-be, and they don't assume,
because a technician cannot assume anything.
If some people are too busy, disinterested, lazy, whatever, to verify
these theings, then I'll bet it's closer to the 1% than the 99%. I'll
bet that lots of people will check these headers to find out who I am.
You set out to smear a bunch of people, believing that you are in the
presence of people who can't see past your ruse, but these people are
on to your game, and are even (some of them) learning a few things.
What can I say? Even if it was unintended...you're a teacher! :-P

PS-My name may be found by a simple equation based on my current 'nym.
X+sqrtX+(X*2.5)
or
X+sqrtX+(X+7)
and even more easily by doing some header checks.

Another option Seth, is to get a different newsreader that enable you to
see the headers for every message without a bunch of mouse clicks. I use
Gravity, but other users find enjoyment with X-news, or Forte Free
Agent.
Once you use some other readers, you will find that OE is really quite
poor!

Why don't you just give it up, loser? You can emulate any of us anytime you
want, but you accomplish nothing, because we can see right through you. Go
ahead and post crap in Tom's name. Post garbage in mine, if you like.
We'll all know the difference at first glance.
You see, there are several basic differences between you and the rest of us
that stands out like a sore thumb. Little things like: We can spell; We
can punctuate; We don't construct 68 word run-on sentences. We can use 3
and 4 syllable words without consulting a dictionary, etc. But mostly we
can tell ourselves from you by virtue of the fact that we don't just post a
pile of trash, just to see our own words. We post questions and answers of
a technical nature, most of which are at least 50 IQ points above your
limited capacity to function as a cognizant human being.
Now, why don't you just be a good little boy and return yourself to
"alt.rock.look-what-crawled-out-from-underneath" where you belong?

However, if you have been paying attention to all this activity, you would
see that when he impersonates someone, he copies their "email address" as
well. So if you killfile him on each nickname he uses, you will killfile
him for a few mins and killfile the legitimate posters he has been
impersonating for months for as long as you leave the killfile in place.

He doesn't always cop the "From:" line exactly, though. Attention to
detail is SUCH an important thing in technical work. :-)
