Chris,
A lot of companies require A+ for entry level help desk and service
technicians. Network+ appears to be gaining nearly the same acceptance. A
technician with 1 year of experience, an AS degree and A+ typically earns
around $17 an hour about $34k a year. Most companies reimburse for
certification exams, especially the ones they require.
What study isn't self study? At some point every student self studies. But,
we all learn differently. I self studied for all my Comp-TIA exams, and most
of my Microsoft Certifications. What I recommend is that you use the method
that works for you. Also, if you have never taken a CBT exam I recommend
that you use a good prepware product as a metric to determine when you are
ready. Once you get a few certs under your belt, you'll know what to expect
and can drop the prepware. But, for a beginner, they are cheaper than the
test / re-test. Think of it as insurance that pays for itself initially.
