yeah - Everyone seemed to rave about this study guide,
but maybe they didn't have anyone telling them where it was right vs
wrong.
And the review questions... I'm only on chapter 4 (TCP/IP utilities)
and they seem pretty lame...
I'd be more concerned with techs knowing when and what tools to use
vs having to memorize the "-r" vs the "-R" for which command,
but if that's on the Network+ test....ok - different thread for Network+
test reality check -

I've been dragging out my old TCP/IP books,
one by Uyless Black and another major reference I use by Douglas Comer.
After reading thru the David Groth study guide,
I've started questioning the terminology I've been using for the past
10yrs -
even the nitty gritty of frames vs packets & which layer is responsible
for what...
I'll finish reviewing the David Groth study guide for my friend's class,
and then return it to the library and see what else might be out there
that is more on target technically
and can at least include the IP addressing fields in an IP datagram

You'll end up and smug and proud of yourself till your friend fails the cert
test. Passing certs, and cert study materials have little at all in common
with the real world.
The Groth book is for passing the cert exam, no more, no less. Its NOT for
'network technician' training. Nor is any other cert study guide.

not smug - just knowledgeable, from doing this for the past couple of
decades or so -
My biz friend and I used to write these kinds of tests for some
companies we worked with,
and the equipment the engineers would be installing - digital
transmission racks
It's the lack of concepts that seem to elude most of these books...
ie - Some question about how to increase performance on a LAN
by merely swapping a switch for a hub - is it always that simple ?
Let me re-focus that - what if there is only ONE server - then how does
a switch help ?
The "concept" of parallel conversations between clients and servers
is never really mentioned - nor the concept of potentially adding a 2nd
NIC
to the ONE server to potentially create a 2nd access path -
That's the kind of discussion I like to see....
