| both support gigabit, so what gives?
does cat6 have more twists/less crosstalk/longer runs?

| more twists - yes,
less crosstalk - yes,
more bandwidth for data - yes,
longer runs - no (At least I don't believe that's the
case. I have not seen it mentioned anywhere.)

If my memory serves me right, I believe 5e was just a stop gap until 6
was raitafied (sorry about the spelling...)
