I have a strange problem with my wireless network that I just setup.

I have a desktop connected to a port on an access point, and I have an
802.11b PCMCIA card on my laptop.

From my desktop when I try to get to a hidden share (\\laptop\c$) I'm
prompted for a username and password then I'm given access to the share.

From my laptop, when I try to get to a hidden share (\\desktop\c$) I'm only
prompted for a password and the user name has been pre-filled with
desktop\Guest. I had the guest account disabled, and when I enabled it and
setup a password, it won't take from the laptop. When I log out of the
desktop as the administrator, and log in as the guest the password works, so
I don't think there is anything wrong with the account.

Both the laptop and desktop are running Win XP Pro. I followed some
Knowledge Base instructions to disable the simplified file sharing, to
enable NetBIOS over TCP/IP, and to make sure the Computer Browser service is
turned on, and it still doesn't work.

I check the standard settings (protocols, hardware configuration...) on my
laptop and desktop and can't seem to find anything that stands out as being
wrong.

I don't think there is a problem with the wireless router or pc card because
I can connect successfully from my desktop to my laptop, but I can't connect
from my laptop to my desktop.

Can anyone help out? Give me a clue? Let me know if you need any
information from me to complete the puzzle...

If you can give me as much information as you can at one time I would
appreciate it because I won't be able to test your suggestions until later
in the evening when I get home from work...

I've tried the combination of settings on my desktop. On my desktop I
Enabled the 802.1x auth and only tried the MD5 for the EAP type. I don't
really know what EAP type I should use so I didn't play with that too much.
I also tried a combination of setting the authenticate as computer and
authenticate as guest and I still didn't get any result I was hoping for.

What EAP type should I use? And on what side do I make these changes on or
should they match on both the desktop and laptop? I currently only tried
changing the desktop because I thought the problem was on that side. I
thought/think it's the desktop that's not allowing anyone trying to login as
anything other than guest. Am I wrong?

make sure you have user accounts setup on both machines which will remove
the prompts.

Where did you read to disable the file sharing? You will need it if you want
to share or access files on the two machines.

I also found this on Microsoft's site...

http://support.microsoft.com/defaul...kb;EN-US;308007

It says that all shares are accessed through the guest account. But if this
was true, how come I can access hidden shares and received the prompt for a
username and password going from my desktop to my laptop?

under network connections = Local Area Connection then properties what do
you see?

Do you have accounts for user one for example on both machines?

I'm a little confused by what you're referring to.

Under Network Connections > Local Area Connection > Properties I see 3 tabs,
General, Authentication, and Advanced.

I do not see anything referring to user accounts.

But if you're asking if I have the same user account on both systems I did.
But this is something that can be argued. On my laptop I have an account
"Martinez Alan K" and on my desktop I have an account "Alan". I changed the
account name on the desktop to match my laptop, and I changed the password
to match also. And I get the same results as described earlier. Do you
think if I just created a new "Martinez Alan K" account on the desktop from
scratch it would help?

As far as what I see on the properties page, if there is something else I
should be seeing or go to specifically let me know... I've been searching
MS Knowledge Base and I have not found anything that I did not try yet or
totally pertains to my situation.

Alan K. Martinez

I'm sorry, but I'm still a little confused as to where you're referring me
to...

Under Network Connections, I see all the possible network adapters that I
have available to me.
When I right click on the network adapter I'm using for the connection that
I'm having trouble with I go to Properties for the Local Area Connection
that I selected.
I see a General tab and it lists all the protocols, services, and clients
that I have installed for that connection. I don't see anything referring
me to User Accounts. Am I in the wrong place? Also remember, this is on
Windows XP. So some of the options might be worded a little different or in
a different location.

I'm sorry, I misunderstood what you were typing... what you typed was...

"under network connections = Local Area Connection then properties
what do you see?"

"Do you have accounts for user one for example on both machines?"

Which seemed to me that you were asking if there was any user account
information under the local area connections properties... sorry...

Under 'this connection uses the following' I see

Client Service for NetWare
Client For Microsoft Networks
File and Printer Sharing for Microsoft Networks
QoS Packet Scheduler
NWLink NetBIOS
NWLink IPX/SPX/NetBIOS Compatible Transport Protocol
Internet Protocol (TCP/IP)

This is on both the laptop and desktop. On the off chance it would help I
installed the Client Service for Netware on the desktop last night even
though I know it's not connected to a Novell network. I just thought I
would try...

As far as user accounts on both workstation, I do not have mirrored accounts
on the machines (one user account/name on both machines). But I am still
able to connect to my laptop and be prompted for a user name and password of
an account on the laptop, but on the desktop Guest is the default account
and I can't change it, and even if I type the correct password it just
loops...

It was disabling simplified file sharing under Windows XP. With simplified
file sharing you do not have access to change the security and file sharing
attributes of some shares. If you disable the simplified file sharing it
you regain the file sharing and security features or menu options that were
available in Windows 2000 and NT. File sharing is still present with
simplified turned on, you just don't have all the menu options.

I found the solution to my problem also. I noticed that the EAP type for
authentication on my laptop was set to Smart Card or Other, but on my
desktop it was set to MD5 for some reason. I don't remember changing it.
But when I changed my desktop to Smart Card or Other, it resolve my problem.

Thanks for reading my post and helping!!!!
