| Does anyone know of a Security+ Newsgroup? I'm thinking of studying for
that exam. I've been looking for books, but the subject of Security is so
broad I don't know which would be the best book to study.
Thanks,
Carolina

| Carolina,
You're right, the objectives for any security related cert are very wide,
but keep in mind that they are not terribly deep. I'm preparing for the
CISSP and have some great material that would also serve someone very well
for the security + exam. I've taken a few security plus practice exams,
every thing covered by it is also in the CISSP exam (although the CISSP has
much more).
Email me direct.

| The Sybex book is OK, but I would recommend a whole lot more material for
Sec+. The exam is far more difficult than any other Comptia exam and I
believe still suffering from growing pains. The pdf by Tcat Howser and
Helen O'Boyle and the CBT nuggets are excellent recources.

Dang I hate the way Comptia write questions ... lol. I had a couple that
the question was right out of a CISSP test, but the answers were all scrwed
up - plus a couple that were "what is considered?" - I can consider anything
I like, but facts are FACTS. In a professional exam there should be
absolutely no place for questions that are based on considerations, or ones
that have several answers that are correct but you have to guess which
correct one Comptia wants - bloody amateurish!!
I will complete soon, but for now I am finishing some Microsoft stuff and
getting my butt out looking for a decent position.

Yeah I can understand the CompTIA thing. Some of the questions on the
Net+ were like that but thank god there was alot of study material out
there for that exam. I went to the book store and only saw 3 books
that covered Sec+ and hearing of your experience I might just wait a
little longer to take the exam. Want to get Server+ and the last exam
for my MCSA first anyhow.
Currently working on my CNA which I should take sometime next week and
hopefully pass. I thought Microsoft was the only OS with totally
redunant options and features but Netware 5 is almost as bad but
nowhere near as complex and 2000 server.

| I had no interest in taking the Security+ exam, but now I may since
it is an elective for the MCSE Security certification. My other choice is to
take the ISA exam, but I know just a little about ISA at this time. I was in
Barnes and Noble the other day looking over about four Security+ books they
had there. I agree with Russ as I was a bit dismayed at how little
information there is in any of the books, including the "highly rated" one
[sorry I do not believe the reviews are from real test takers] on Amazon.
When you take all the fluff out, most books had about 200 pages double
spaced info at best. One of the books had a whole page and a half on ipsec
for instance - Microsoft has hundreds of pages in it's White Papers. There
is a lot of free info about security on the web, and it is a very vast
topic. I am confident I could probably pass the test at least on the second
try, but it would be a bit pricy to do it that way. I certainly would not
rely on one book. I will say that Technet Security website has evolved into
a fantastic source of security info, even though it is geared to Microsoft
products. See link for another great security site from the Microsoft
Security Newsgroups FAQ.

| Good idea Pat - my recommendation is to wait until some 2nd edition study
guides are released. I think the Sybex book with Tcat & Helens pdf (the
full one) and CBT nuggets would be a good range of material - accompanied by
some relevant white papers on any subject you are leery of.

Considering that Miscrosoft has a Czar on the Comptia Sec+ committee I think
it is a safe bet that you could find a lot of the material around their
site. One thing that had me scratching my head was a couple of questions
that were word for word off of a CISSP practice exam - but with the answers
changed to make it look like they were different. The only problem was that
there were two 100% correct answers ... lol. The problem is that Comptia
is full of theorists who firmly believe in things like phsycometrics (sp?)
and as long as the bi-laterals are under 5% they are happy with the test.
IMHO a professional exam has no room for 'considerations' or 5% error rates
and MUST be 100% factual.
