Real-world wages w/ minimum experience
|
|
|
| I was wondering if anyone knows of some real-world wages by having the
Network+ certification but minimul experience (such as under 2 years) in the
IT field.
Thank you!

| I'm on a co-op term for 1 year and they gave me $30,000 CDN working
34hrs/week. I don't really think my certification had much to do with the
wage since it is
co-op but that's just a figure. This is my first job in I.T and it is
providing technical support at the Help Desk to 600 internal and remote
users who work across the country. I guess if they decided to hire me after
graduation they would factor the certifications into my wage since I will
have more than these by my graduation in 2005.

| Steven S,
Don't know which part of Canada you are in but here in Toronto the market
SUCKS, the most I have seen in what would be considered entry level is
between 28,000 to 35,000, and that is with certifications. If you are
looking for big money find another career.

| That's funny, I work for a little company in Scarborough that publishes law
material. I guess it depends on the luck of the draw. What education,
experience and certifications do you have Techie?

| It was just a saying. Well since I'm currently doing Help Desk I don't think the certifications can be used to justify my pay. In all honesty, wages already take into account certifications since most job requirements in I.T. specifically state that you must have an MCSE, CCNA etc.
Keep in mind that I will be doing network administration not Help Desk support after graduation. This Help Desk job is to get my foot in the door and add some experience to my credentials.
During an interview I can use my certifications to land the job rather than negotiate a salary which can be done at a much later time after I've proven that my certifications are more than just "paper". Certifications show the employer that I have the initiative to continue learning which is probably the bigger picture. | |

| If you want to make the big money you need to go to the software side. If
you can develop oracle databases or be a QA engineer you can make 70,000 no
problem. Since the market is saturated you need to start off low though. I
see to many people frustrated with the market and wanting more money and
most of them are all in their early 20's. We are all still young, don't
panic and just keep learning. I will agree its not the 90's where people
were hired for 90 grand to design a website. Companies are smarter now and
all the crap businesses that were started on the net are gone now. I will
say that I miss the pets.com commercials though. Very amusing.

| Steven???
Ok, that is a whole different prospect, network Admins starting salaries
depending on education, experience, and certifications can range between
35,000 to 50000 BUT in the current market the best I have seen is about
40,000.
In reality certifications usually get the interview, in and of themselves
they won't get you a job. To really get the job, you need to apply what you
learned getting the certs and from other real world work experiences to
really get the job.

| I am using my certifications to land me the interview. As for soft skills, I believe I can show them that mine are second to none. I'm currently a part-time manager at fast food restaurant and interact with 100's of customers a day. I manage anywhere between 5-11 employess per shift. I think that experience will help greatly in showing that I am more than just technical knowledge. | |

| which I would also agree will show people skills which are probably as
important if not more so in some cases than technical skills.

Unfortunately it's not a hot market for techies, though it is definitely a
little better than a year ago. With just 1 certification and 2 years
experience, you can probably expect from $11 to $18 an hour - depending on
where you look. Large tech support call centers that are OUTSOURCED (e.g. John
Doe's Support Company provides support for America Online) pay the absolute
least, while in the corporate environment where you can be an on-site support
person or trainer...you'll make more.
