Author Server?

I am going to make a home network with two pc's and a laptop. I have
another machine and was thinking about using it as a server. Would it be a
good idea to use windows 2000 server or just use it as another computer on
the network, but only as a place to file things and so on. Also as a home
network, would I have to buy licensing to use windows 2000 server or could I
just use the software? Thanks,
Mark

When you buy Windows Server 2K or 2003 it comes with a pre determined number
of licenses so you buy up front and if needed you can add on later.

Now in your case are you going to go into networking with MS? If yes then
you will need server and a lab setup of a couple of client computers so why
not go for it. If your answer is no then forget the server and just use
Windows 2000 or XP on the machine and use it as a "server" in a peer to peer
network.

What exactly are you trying to accomplish with your network?
You can just use Windows 2000 Professional - it's cheaper.
You can probably get away with Windows 98 .. all depends on your purpose
for the network....heck...you could even try Linux and Samba if you feel
like
tinkering a bit and that would be free.

If you are just looking to get experince, you may want to try
an 120-180 day trial version of Win2K server or Win2K3 server that
are available either from a Microsoft training kit or Win2K3 eval kit from
Microsoft.com.
