I have MCSE in NT4.0. My company says I need to get a Network+. I
already have an A+, MCP-XP and CLP. My argument is since the MCSE
contains Network Essentials I do not need Network+. Am I wrong?

Mitch,
The network+ is identical to the Network Essentials exam you wrote for your
NT4 MCSE, actually its easier. I would have to agree with you but you can
never make sense of those HR types.

Scare them: Get your CCNA instead.
Just kidding...well..kinda.....get both.

Net Essentials was vendor based and that made it a little harder
because you had to know Microsoft specific info. The Net+ is vendor neutral
(supposedly)
and should have only minor additions to what you already know - especially
when it comes
to WAN. There is no certificate for passing Net Essentials - there is for
Net+ so I think that
may be why your employer wants you to do it.

I am in your boat...have MCSE4 but since my company pays for exams,
I will take the Net+ after the CCNA (backwards I know).

You should take the Net+ and then CCNA - the logical progression.

I am working on my MCSE & MCDBA and have completed the core
requirements. Net+ covers a very broad base of network technology.
While Microsofts MCSE networking covers a more defined set of networking
specifically for their servers and services. Having taken and passed
the infamous 70-216 exam I can tell you that NET+ went into more depth
on a lot of varied networking technologies.

I guess the bottom line is what type of duties you perform for the
company. If you are into networking side then NET+ and possibly Cisco
would be useful. If you are strictly in system administrations then I
believe a MCSE would be satisfactory unless your networking
infrastructure is fairly complex..

That's exactly what I am doing now, before getting the word about the
N+.

Actually, the CCNAB self study guide's first few parts and chapters
would prepare me and refresh the essentials for the Network+ test. And
since the company pays for the tests that I pass, I might as well give
it a shot during the CCNA study.
