| I must add that many of you talk the talk, but are either still in school, or
don't quite understand what is happening in the IT employment world today.
Companies are moving to "on-Site" services and cheaper solutions than using on staff employees.
Consolidating resources, cutting IS staff and giving normal employees more responsibility.
"Trimming the fat"
The fact that I have no HS diploma is by far the reason I am still unemployed. HS diploma does zilch in the real world.
In fact, .. I have called several HR persons today and they say that experience in a certain proffession goes above and
beyond a "book smart" person fresh out of college or high school.
Certificationss and Degrees simply back it up. (ROCKON!)
Ever heard of ROI ? - Return On Investment college is an Investment.
The fear of NO job after college may be scarey, but it is a reality in today's IT economy.
I have a friend that spent $55K on his college education .. got his Bachelors in CS, MCSE, MCSD and couldn't find a job.
He pays over $400.00/mo on his student loan - differed it 2 times now ... and will be paying on it for over 10 years. No thanks.
My wife still has a $12K college debt I am fighting to pay off, along with raising 2 kids .. she went to a 2 years college and it did NOTHING for her career.
My Sister has a $30K+ debt for her BA in Business Man. .. and she only has a $13/hr job working as a supervisor for a phone company. OUCH!
College and the debt of it are questionable and not really an option for me at this point.
The option of putting my family on the street so I can go to school it is not possible.
High Schools and Corporate America have brainwashed us into thinking college is necessary and you will fail without it. It has become "Expected" of us.
The expense puts a MASSIVE burden on you and your family, not to mention the overall knowlege can be gained from CBT's and Books for 1/4 the cost.
Think about it ... a Cert is a Cert. A BA in CS is replaced by 5 years experience ... if you can get lucky like me and get a job to gain that type of experience.
Is a paper MCSE really a threat to an experienced person ? IMO - no, depending ont he experience and the person.
(I have worked with a paper MCSE .. not too bright when it comes to solutions and troubleshooting REALTIME problems.)
Quite trivial ... but IMO .. college and Certifications should be something you do for YOU.
DO it for YOU .. not for a JOB.
I am doing it for me, to prove it to myself.
Thanks again for the replies,
Bob Brown
