Hi A+/Net+ gang,

Excuse the cross post I figured I'd send this out to both groups. I have a
bit of a very strange issue with my brother's work computer. They're running
a small peer to peer network all with W98 a router was recently installed in
the ceiling. Up until a few days ago everything was running fine, my brother
was printing to a networked printer when he came back from lunch he couldn't
access the printer nor any of the computers on the network.

I went in today, I still can't figure the problem. He can access the
internet no problem, I can ping the router and access the router set-up just
fine. It's just the LAN it's not seeing. I took in my laptop running XP,
hooked it up and accessed the network just fine (both 'net and LAN).
Everything is set-up to dhcp from the router; I've checked the workgroup I
even changed the workgroup name to double check, still nothing on my bro's
computer. The cable is fine and the router because his internet is fine.

When I rebooted I get an error that the 'vserver.vxd' file is missing; which
my brother said he never got that error before. The only thing I can think
of is he has no anti-virus software as the subscription ran out and he's
been bugging his boss to renew it. Other then that I'm stumped; usually
either the connection is there or it's not; to be able to access the 'net
and router yet not any of the other computers even when the workgroup is
correct is the big puzzle. There's no firewalls on any of the workstations
except the built in firewall on the router.

Any thoughts?.

This may sound silly, but I have ran into something similar. Try removing
and then reinstalling the client for microsoft networks. You might try the
same with NetBEUI if applicable.

Nick,

It's not as silly as it sounds, I've had some strange set-ups, for example
my father has an old laptop running W98 and his desktop running 2000. They
won't see or talk to each other under TCP/IP when I add Netbeui into the mix
they suddenly see each other fine. Yet with my two systems I can see the W98
laptop using tcp/ip just fine.

It crossed my mind to try and reinstall 'client' and even TCP/IP but they
didn't have a 98 cd handy and I didn't happen to have mine on me, so I was
limited to what I could try without a disc handy.

Thanks again for the suggestion.

Replace that file: vserver.vxd by using the system file checker tool in
Win98.
