Author A+ / network+ Certification in a school

Hello everyone,

I am a teacher at a vocational training institute where we try to turn 16-22
year olds into system administrators. At the moment whe are in a process of
modyfing our curriculum. One of the things we are thinking about, is making
the A+ and Network+ Certification part of our curriculum.

I think you feel the question coming.....does anyone in this NG have any
experience with using the a+ / network+ certification in a school? Does
CompTIA have any programs for schools? Does anyone knows any good
learning-materials ??

Thanks in advance!

Bernard.

CompTIA has the JOBS+ program for schools and such... And if you want to
turn them into System Administrators, then go up all the way to MCSA while
you're at it, since A+ and Network+ alone won't cut it.

Also... are you sure this is a good idea?? System Administrator positions
are FEW and FAR between, simply due to the fact that a Network doesn't need
that many System Administrators and because companies are outsourcing IT
these days...

I think they'd get better pay and job prospects as Data Cable installers,
maybe some fiber-optic course.. Printer/Monitor repair also pays pretty
well.

I took the Network+ exam (001 not 002) last year after taking a 9 week
course at a local community college. The class I took experimented with,
"The Novell Guide to Network+", Course 1400. I had a chance to look
through other "text books", as the other classes were using a different
text, by course technology / thomas learning. My employer paid so I bought
both books. Novell's KIT, if I recall was well over $100 the other book
around $65 give or take a few bucks. In either case, I found the Novell
book easier to read and understand, perfect for study and most importantly -
it covered everything on the exam! Each chapter subsection is set up with
Q&A, chapters also include multiple real world scenarios. This book was
also beneficial in coasting the 1st semester CCNA course at a different
school. I don't know if Novell offers a book for the 002 exam, but you
would be doing your students a BIG favor looking into it. There is a BIG
difference up front for the cost of the book, but the Network+ test isn't
cheap especially if one were to have to take it twice.

Hi Bernard-

My name is Mike Meyers - I write books on the A+ and Net+ certifications.

Lots of schools are doing exactly what you describe. In response to a number
of requests, I have a complete study kit for A+ and Net+, published by
Osborne/McGraw-Hill. This includes text books, lab manuals, teach guides,
presentations materials, practice questiosn - everything you need.

If this is of interest to you, please contact Kathy Yale of my office. Her
email is on our contact page.

I will leave it to the opinions of others in this newsgroup as to the
quality of my work.

I just passed the Network+ after using your text to review. It concisely
put together all the material I'd studied. Gracias.
