Do you mean just remembering the layers?

All People Seem To Need Data Processing

If you mean remembering the function of each layer and associated protocols,
that's a bit more difficult. Try memorizing a short definition of each
layer's function first, then learn the typical devices and protocols, and
apply the protcol's function to the layer's general definition.
Just takes a bit of study, and in this case a bit of memorization helps.
Flashcards could be help and pretty cheap to make up your own set.

Here's neat free visual aide:

http://xpi.comms.agilent.com/bv/posters.asp

Full color poster with most every protocol you've heard of.
(probably extra slow shipping though, wouldn't really expect in time to help
if you intend on testing in the next couple weeks, still pretty cool
posters, with high 'geek gear' ratings)

There is only one OSI model, I think you are referring to the DOD model.
I think the DOD model is a waste but the server+ exam seems to think its
important. What does anyone else feel about that.

It is very important because the TCP/IP stack (or suite) follows this model
almost to the 't'.

Its quite easy to remember as follows

Application Presentation Session = Application or Process
Transport = Host to Host
Network = Internet
Data Link Physical = Network access

So as you can see, very simple, and very very important just to know.

The only reason I would give it any importance is on the chance a test
question may pop up on a network related test, so in that context its worth
doing a bit of memorization. Other than..useless, unless of course you're a
"net history" buff

I know this answer I asked it a few weeks ago
and I got lots of great answers but the one I kept remembering with
amazing detail was the weirdest one I thought I'd forget first
a - a - application
p - penguin - presentation
s - sat - session
t - to - transfer
n - near - networking
d-l - David-Lee's - Data-Link
p - pony - physical

A penguin sat to near David-Lee's pony.

My mother with no computer skills other then solitaire and minefield thought
this up for me
