| I see a lot of people on here have gotten their A+, N+, and even other
certifications. I'm on the same path myself (A+ certified; Taking N+
Friday).
However, I would like to get an idea of how many people that achieve these
certs. have actually benifited, job-wise and/or financially (raise,
promotions, benifits, etc.).
I'm about to graduate. I've applied to numerous jobs (about 30) and haven't
gotten any calls yet.
I just want to know what the consensus is on people benifiting from these,
or other, certifications.
Have any of you with no IT experience gotten a job soon after you got your
cert.?
Who has benifited?
Who has not? *cringe*
I'm just curious. Let me know.
Thanks,
Matt

Partly due to getting my A+ cert to "verify" my skills at my current job, I
actually received both a promotion and an 8% pay increase just last month.
This compared to standard 3.5% raises the last two years, with no remarkable
change in responsibilities or job performance.
While this modest raise may raise guffaws from some in the group, many folks
I know in this area are thankful to see 3% or more, or to even still have a
job in their chosen field at this point. Things have been this way (in my
area) for about the last three years.
Additionally, my employer is also paying for me to pursue Net+ asap, and I
should get the voucher for that exam fairly soon.
I work in a company that has roughly 40 other people equally titled/employed
in my position. Fully less than half have taken advantage of
company-provided A+ cert training/testing, and less than 5% Net+. I
privately think that this is a huge mistake, as it can be seen as apathetic.
While I'm not so naive to believe the certs make me invincible to economic
cutbacks, I look around me and have to believe that those certs only help my
cause.
Good luck on the exam.

| Thank you, Stew. I appreciate the response.
Thanks for wishing me luck, as well. I wish the same for you.
Anyone else?

| It's a tough market right now. There was a time when certification meant a
job offer. No more. Wish I had some advise for you. I HOPE to make 25%
this year of what I made in 2001.

| Stew,
If the other techs in your company are as apathetic as you state in this
economy and given the fact your employer is offering such a big raise after
getting the A+ and pushing the Network+ they may quickly find themselves in
the unemployment line or worse ........ working for you.
Any time and employer offers training take it as long as the terms are not
too demanding take it.

Daniel,
I can only assume that the cert. contributed positively to both the small
promotion and raise, inasmuch as I'd requested it be placed into my
performance plan (which also forced the company to come forward with the
funds/scheduling for the class and vouchers.)
I'm of the same opinion as you - it's a nasty world out there. I'd be insane
NOT to take every opportunity and advantage for certs and other training no
matter whether I remain with the company or wind up somewhere else.
I can't speak for the lack of motivation of others - and there are plenty of
talented people in that group. I can't imagine anyone paying attention
wouldn't realize the state of the industry as well as the overall economy.
I'm pressing hard for my Net+ vouchers at this moment....

| Just remember that now there are many people out there who just got
certifications with no experience and were hired right away. However, those
same people caused their own down fall when they could not do the job just
talk about it. Now managers and the like look for a combination of
experience and certifications. If you can get all the training that you can
even if it does not lead to a certification but if you can get certified go
for it. Just remember that there is no substitue for experience....

| On the other side of the coin. With companies still cutting back and
cutting cost (read payroll) certifications are NO guarantee one will stay
employed. I know this all too well. The upside is, if your employer is
offering to pay for the training and /or testing TAKE IT! When looking for
the next job you will be better positioned against all those other
applicants will experience only, or certifications only.
What came first getting a job or passing the exam??? Better yet, how to
make the good money with or without the certs? First, if you try hard
enough you can get a job with an IS dept. But, do you want to work for $6
an hour? The good paying jobs require experience not necessarily certs.
Sure the ad may say they want certain certs but if would you hire someone
with 5+ years real experience or someone who read a book and took a couple
of classes?
Reality, most of the requirement in the want ads are there to keep the
volume of applicants down to more serious candidates. DO NOT limit your
applications to only ads that you meet their requirements!!! If you are
interested and think you can do the job - APPLY, if you don't someone else
will! After all the worst they can do is tell you no or better yet no, but
we have something else you may be interested in. Once you're in, you will
get the experience you need to add to the certs and b4 you know it you'll be
making the good money you were looking for and if they don't want to pay you
someone else will.

| I work for Time Warner. Had my A+ when hired .Initally got hired on as a
grunt ie cable installer with the understanding they do have a internet
department. I thank my A+ 1. for the job offer 2. for my promotion into tech
support. so yeah i think it is worth it.
