Passed today, but just barely. Test was pretty tough in comparison to
what the study guides teaches. The questions are worded a way that can
confuse you. The questions on the test were nothing like any of the
practice tests on the passport CD by Mike Meyers or the Sybex book CD.
My suggestion to those who will take the exam, look at more than one
or even two sources to study from. I barely got out alive today!

I agree- I used Sybex and another study guide I don't remember the name of-
as well as various exam cram websites- the questions on the test were sort
of off in left field-- I barely scraped by on Net+.

Hello SMHKR76-

Congrats on passing! I do have to admit that I'm a bit bothered by your
statement that my questions "weren't anything like" the questions on the
test. Of course, if I just put the test questions verbatim in my books I'd
probably get sued by CompTIA but I've always felt that I gave a good "look
and feel" to the real exam questions.

While I can;t ask you about specific questions, could you give me an idea as
to topic areas that I may have missed? Or is it more of a "Yeah you covered
it put they asked it from a different angle" type of thing.

Any input you'll give is greatly appreciated.

Please let me know how the test is different from Mike's traianing
materials. I bought Mike's textbook, CD rom and sample test CD and I am
planning to take the test next week.

I agree, i did my net+ test before xmas and was convinced that i had
failed. Somehow i got a score of 754. The questions in the Myers All
in one book and his passport net+ books are a breeze in comparision.
I was doing the myers tests in about 20-25mins, and getting high 95%,
whereas in the net+ test i took almost all the 90mins.
I would not know where to get the same difficulty of questions in any
book. There is an option on the CompTIA net+ where you can sit a mock
test if i recall correctly. That should give you a better idea of the
question standard.

Good luck.

One possible explanation: I am sure that the CompTIA has read the
questions in Mr. Myers's books. Perhaps they have made the questions more
difficult over time in response to the existence of these sample
question sources.

I don't really know one way or the other; just a thought.

My thoughts...

Mike's questions, both in the book and on the CD, are designed to check basic knowledge (cable legths, topology, protocols etc)

I haven't taken the exam yet, but from what I've read, it's very heavy on troubleshooting scenarios.

Therein lies the difference. Mike's questions are designed to reinforce learning of basic concepts.

The exam questions are designed to see if you can apply that knowledge.

E.g. Mike's question may say "what is the maximum cable length on a 10BaseT segment?"
but the exam question would start off with "A workstation is 110 meters from the hub. The user cannot connect to the network..."

The exam expects you to use the cable length knowledge learned from Mike's book/questions & use that knowledge to determine that the workstation is too far away from the hub.

If you know your stuff, you shouldn't have to read past the "110 meters" part of a troubleshooting scenario to know where the question is heading & how to fix the problem.

Perhaps in the next edition of Mike's book, he could use the book questions to test basic knowledge & on the CD, put questions that use the facts learned from the book question into scenario format.

Just an idea.

someone lent me their book .. the Mike Meyers version. There was no cd in
it and its suppose to be the examweb version. If you have the book and
the cd is the exam a demo one or the real thing as I might go buy the book
for the exam. It looks like you feel its not comparable.

thanks,
K

Mike,

I used you All in one net+ book and I bought the Net+ practice test from
www.totalsem.com and I found the questions to be very close to the real
test.
