Author computer not recognized

I have a PC166 on a TCP/IP n/w running W95 that can't find the n/w. I have
pinged the loopback - OK, winipcfg shows no IP address assigned but it does
recognize the DHCP server, TCP/IP is installed and bound to the NIC, I have
active link lights and have checked the connection of the patch cord at both
ends. When I click RENEW in winipcfg it takes forever to respond that it
can't find the DHCP server. I've checked device manager and the NIC has no
conflicts with other resources. For all intents and purposes it should
work! Anyone have any ideas on this one???

Thanks for your time...

Hey dood

First up, what system do you have DHCP running? Not knowing the network
setup makes it kind of difficult to diagnose, but I am guessing that you
have the correct subnet mask and gateway? A little more info and I am sure
the answer will come fairly quickly.

Russ,
DHCP is running on a NT4 box. It is administering about 135 other machines
successfully. The DHCP server isn't the problem here.

Replace the network cable to the workstation.

I will go with Andy for now - replace the cable.

You said you could ping the loopback address, did you try pinging the
server? 135 machines on 1 NT4 box is an awful lot don't you think?

Brian,

It's worked well for 5 years. This is an isolated incident. Yes, I've
tried pinging other sites and they all time out.

OK - I haven't read your earlier posts, but I am guessing that you have....
a. pinged loopback
b. checked for activity light flashing
c. replaced the patch cable
d. verified IP - Subnetmask - Gateway - DNS - WINS addresses

Hmmmmmm

Are you able to connect to an outside source?
What type of network is it?

Sounds perhaps a problem with a switch./hub at this stage.

Russ,

Outside sources (or even inside for that matter) are not available. Unless
it would be a problem with a particular port on the switch... I'll check
that out...

Hmmm - interesting.
Just for the hell of it, I would swap the patch lead and the NIC.

We may have tracked the problem down to incorrect drivers for the NIC. A
guy who formerly worked here may have ghosted from a computer using one type
of nic to another using a different nic. We did find one other computer
with the same problem.

I'll keep you posted...

Thanks for all the input!
