I need to run about 30 ft. of cable under the house. I have heard of cat5
made for outdoor use but have not seen it anywhere. Since, for the most
part, the cable will not be exposed to the elements, just temp, can I run
standard PVC cable. Thanks.

Since this is just *under* the house and not "exposed", it shouldn't be
a problem. Just keep the cable up and out of the way so that "critters"
don't decide to make a snack out of the insulation. 8-)

Cheers!

I usually run PVC conduit in those occasions to make sure the cabling is
kept dry and safe from critters.

You'll get a good answer from professionals in comp.dcom.cabling
(though you may not like the answer...)

Draka comteq manufactures an All Weather SuperCAT category 5e outdoor cable
able to support temperatures from -70C to +75C

"OUTDOOR INSTALLATIONS require special installation techniques that will
enable the cable to withstand harsh environments. When using cable in an
aerial application, lash the cable to a steel messenger wire. This will help
support the cable and reduce the stress on the cable during wind, snow, and
ice storms. When direct burying a cable, lay the cable without tension so it
will not be stressed when earth is packed around it. When burying in rocky
soil, fill the trench with sand. Lay the cable and then place
pressure-treated wood or metal plates over the cable. This will prevent
damage to the cable from rocky soil settling. In cold climate areas, bury
the cable below the frost line."
