| Hi everybody,
xDSL lines require a modem called endpoint and a NIC. Why is the modem
necessary since the DSL technology is digital? Is it because of the splitter
that allows voice to be carried along with data - in ADSL case?
Anticipated thanks,
Jim

The answer is: ADSL is not digital. At least, not in terms of its
signalling. It uses a modem because it modulates its signal, using a
technique that is more sophisticated than that of a regular modem, but
not all that different from it in general terms. Other types of DSL
actually are digital in signalling, such as HDSL and IDSL.

| It is "digital" only in that the "bits" are different frequencies on the
line, varying in phase.
Much like an analog modem, which is "digital" but which uses frequencies to
signal the
"bits."

DSL uses high frequency signals that run over the Plain Old Telephone
System. The splitter seperates the voice and data signals. The voice
signals which operate from 300 to 3000 Hz go the phone and the high
frequency signals go the the DSL modem.
