Anyone know if a cheap NIC will affect internet connection speed compared to
a 3-com one?

Should not, any NIC is going to run at 10MB or better and that is in the
order of at least 2 to 10 times faster that what your broadband
connection will be. I have used several different generic cards, with no
ill affect.

"Tom's Hardware" is a well recognized website providing valuable information
about computer hardware.
They did a NIC benchmark and published their results.
The conclusion is that there is some difference between Network cards but
the difference is not that great and even if some cards have better
performance than others, over all most of the cards performs within
acceptable ranges

When comparing the same type of NIC, the main difference between manufactors
is not speed but availability, compatibility, autonegotiation and warranty

This is doubtful because the NIC must be set to run at 10 MBS to work
with a cable or DSL modem. Most DSL and cable modems run well below the
10 MBS speed.
