Hello there:

We have a network and when co-workers want to send
me a message, a window pops in my desktop with the
message.
How can I send messages back to them? I believe they go
to the RUN command to do this.
Or is there any other way to do it?

Thank you for your help,

regards,

Sorry to state the obvious but... did you ask them?

SORRY TO STATE THE OBVIOUS, but If I am asking
here in the newsgroup, wouldn't it answer your question???

No, I haven't and I am reserving my questions to them for only
important matters (new in the job)

Regards again...............

Well... Unless you're working by yourself in a basement somewhere, there
must be a 'peer' you can ask close to you...

There is a lot of instant messaging software out there. You'll have to be
more specific (i.e. Is there a menu bar on the window? If you right-click,
does it give you a menu?...).

I just can't see you keeping that job (any job) is you're that shy...

Oh, and please, no more shouting... This is a very quiet group... shhhh!

From what you say this sounds like they are using the NET SEND command
on Windows NT/2000. If you open a command prompt and type:

NET SEND $NETBIOS_NAME$ HELLO WORLD

If the workstation or server has the messaging service running the server
will pop up a dialog saying "HELLO WORLD"

(FROM PROMPT)
The syntax of this command is:
NET SEND
{name | * | /DOMAIN[:name] | /USERS} message

YOu can send this to users or machines or the whole domain.

Hello there:

Firs of all, thank you ITguy_Uk.
That is the right command. I did try and works fine.

You see, I could ask someone in the office but we work in a very busy
environment.
We do Structural Design (Construction done in ACad-Tri-dimensional)
and we have so many things going on, deadline w/the building dept.,
compatibility issues with different platforms of Drawings, etc, that I
prefer
to make an effort to find out for my self before I interrupt someone.

This system has worked for me in the past. I have worked for 2
companies in the last 13 years and proud to say, when I told them I was
leaving, I was offered more money to stay. (Must be my Engineering
approach to things, to develop at my own and show them the way rather than
ask
for help.(sorry Scoop if I have a different approach than your)

Regards and thank you again,

00

[snip...]

Sorry OO. I reacted a bit sarcastically because of past experiences in NG
where users drop-in, and ask questions that they don't research first for
themselves.

Again, my apologies...

Speaking of netsend.....
It can be quite annoying but if done right it can be quite a fun little
tool. I remember when there was a student at my old college who was always
using the computers at school for unsavory acts <cough> porn. This used to
bother me because you don't know who would walk by and see him checking out
the <cough> porn. I got on one of the computers, changed the computer name
to GOD, and sent him messages saying like "We know what you are doing"
"Leave your hands above the keyboard" etc.......

Needless to say it was quite funny watching his reaction.

This doesn't work in Win9x but if you are using 2000 or XP you can use the
"net send" command at a dos prompt.
to do this,, use the run command first,, type in "cmd" {no quotations}
this opens a test window. at that prompt,, type in

"net send <name> <message>" {no quotations of course!}

substitute <name> for the computer name you are sending the message to,,,
and <message> for what ever you want to say.

you can test this by sending a mssg to yourself first,, using your computer
name and a simple hello message,, ie;

net send computername hello

if you have probs,, type in net send ?
good luck
tony
