| How long it takes to schedule and exam depends on the testing center. I
called on Monday morning at 9am and took the exam at 2pm the same day.
You cannot always do this, it depends on the testing center and their
schedule, but it's not at all out of the question. I've even heard of
"walk-ins" with no appointment at all, but allow 30-90 minutes for the
exam center to "prepare" for your exam (they have to register you with
exam site (VUE or Prometrics) and download a unique exam for each
candidate).
Also, I was using a prepaid voucher that I'd bought in advance (the
Friday before) from a 3rd party over the internet with a credit card.
You can buy vouchers for MUCH less than the "retail" cost of the tests.
For example, I took BOTH of the two A+ exams at 2pm (well, one after
the other, but I was done with both by 2:30, passed both easily and
quickly), using two separate vouchers. The "list price" for these exams
is $139 each (essentially $280). I only paid $195 total for BOTH
vouchers. You can get discount vouchers for both the CompTIA and
Microsoft exams at lots of places, and at lots of different prices. I
got mine at:
http://www.ExamVouchers.com/ExamVouchers.asp
If you go there to buy a voucher, please give my name and E-Mail address
as a "referral" (Barry Watzman, Watzman@neo.rr.com). Please note that I
am NOT associated with them in any way, but I do get a very small ($5)
credit for any referrals. They saved me $85, and will save me more in
the future as I'm going for MCSA/MCSE. I was very happy to find out
about this places, I had lots of reservations about it beforehand, but
it went perfectly smoothly and saved me almost a full third of the exam
cost.
[In case you wonder how this works, for a few thousand dollars you can
become a CompTIA member, and members can buy vouchers at a discount, or
at a large discount (as low as $70 each for the "$139" vouchers) if they
buy 250 or more at a time. They are allowed to resell them at any price
they want, and they can make money doing this if they have enough
volume. Usually, these are firms that do training and include the
vouchers as part of the training program for their own students, but
they can also sell the vouchers to non-students.]
