| Can anyone help?
I have a 3 PC network, 2 desktops, + 1 Laptop, connected to a 5 port Netgear
10/100 hub, (running at 10mbp)
Query.
I have a printer, centronics connector ( a few years old so not USB, )
Does anyone know of a way to set the printer up as a network printer?
(I want to use the printer from any of the other PC's instead of having to
have the pc that the printer is connected to on, as well as one of the
others.)
Are there cable adapters available so that I can connect it to the hub using
CAT5 cable, or would I have to wire my own?
I am not too keen on buying a new printer when the one I have is perfectly
serviceable.
Thanks in advance.

You could get an external print server. I recently saw one of the SOHO
hubs/switches with a print server built-in, don't remember the brand.
(Netgear, Linksys, Dlink or ?)

| HP make a real good print server. Depending
on the model of your printer, some can have
cards that netowrk them. This is the case
for most high-end laser printers. For a few
hundred dollars more, you can get a card with
different connectors to hook into a network.
I am guessing you are working with a inkjet
though, so one word of advice, some older HP
inkjets don't like to be networked. I
believe they have fixed this problem but I
don't know how recently. If you do have one,
it might just work fine, but I have heard
many people complain about HP inkjets and
networking.

| why not just connect it to the PC and share it to everyone.. Why buy an new equipment when you have the desktops available? | |
| PC Trouble Shooter --> 2002-08-25, 11:29 am |
| 1). Connect the printer to one of the pc's via the centronics connector
2). Share the printer
3). On other pc's add network printer
4). Bingo you are in business
