Question - UTP Cable Ratings
|
|
|
| I have now looked at 3 different sources for the speed rating for Cat
1-5 cables and all three have given me different #'s
Mike's Book 2nd edition
Cat1-voice
Cat2-4 meg
Cat3-16 meg
Cat4-20 meg
Cat5-100Meg
Sybex Book 3rd edition
Cat1-voice
Cat2-4 meg
Cat3-10 meg
Cat4-16 meg
Cat5-100meg
This Link

Category 1 Voice Only (Telephone Wire)
Category 2 Data to 4 Mbps (LocalTalk)
Category 3 Data to 10 Mbps (Ethernet)
Category 4 Data to 20 Mbps (16 Mbps Token Ring)
Category 5 Data to 100 Mbps (Fast Ethernet
It seems that sybex and this site are the closest.
What does the test expect you to know?
Who's right in your opinion ????
Thanks
Steve

| This page from 3Com seems to back Mike's book (disclaimer - I was a
co-author on the 1st edition):
http://infodeli.3com.com/infodeli/t...sii100/appa.htm
Note the footnote on this page: "For additional information on UTP cable
specifications, refer to publication EIA 568A, EIA/TIA Bulletin: Technical
Systems Bulletin, Additional Cable Specifications for Unshielded Twisted
Pair Cables, TSB-36, Electronic Industries Association."
To really get a final answer, you would have to check the actual standards
(available from www.tiaonline.org) - unfortunately, the standards body
charges for the documents.
It's worth noting (but too new to be on the exam) that an official
definition for Category 6 has finally been established. See the press
release:
http://www.tiaonline.org/media/pres...parelease=02-88
Cheers,
Brian Schwarz

| Cat3 is rated for 16 MBps (ethernet), so it's the cable of choice for
10baseT networks.
For 16MBps Token Ring, you'd have to step up to Cat 4.
Also know that 100baseT4 specifications allow for use over Cat3 existing
wiring (as opposed to the standard Cat5 for 100MBps).
Hope that helps. When all else fails, check www.howstuffworks.com They've
got great info on all IT topics.

| LOL tech. Afterall, aren't we ALL dorks?
I say, any tool or resource that furthers our understanding is invaluable,
and if the dork fits, wear it PROUDLY.
LOL
