| I have been recently put incharge of our companys network. I dont have much
experience at all with it. I just recently graduated with a CAD design
degree. We have 10 computers networked to a server. The person who set up
the server didnt partition the hard drive. So, on the network the whole hard
drive is being shared. My boss wants it set up so that only specific folders
are shared. Do I need to partition the hard drive so that I can place only
the folders that I want shared ? (right now all of the servers windows and
programs are being shared) If I need to partition should I use partition
software?
If anyone can help that would be great. All the computers are running
windows 98 and the server is running windows 200 pro.

You don't need individual partitions to share the data from the drive
properly. It's sounds like you need to attend a Microsoft administration
class however or hire a consultant to properly configure your network.

| Since you only have 10 computers you might get away with creating a single
group/domain and assining them specific rights and permissions. You can
share specific folders and specific files quite easily without going to the
trouble to repartition the drive, move folders, etc. However, it might be
beneficial to create one partition that will hold only programs and another
holding all data so backup might be less cumbersome.

| Might I also recommend you pick up a copy of the MS Press Training Kit for Windows 2000 Server? It will be of great benefit to you on the job and will walk you through how to set some of this stuff up.

| You dont need to partition the drive, you only need to change how the
network share is. To do this, just right clik the harddrive that is being
shared, then select do not share and then select the folders that you want
to be shared, select as new share. Now you have to select which Users can
access that folders , that u have shared, just select which ones then add
them. Now if the company where you work, wants restrictions on the files or
folders u have shared, this is where the Permissions belong to, if u want to
learn this just clik the Help button right there, there's an explanation.
And lastly there is a difference between a network share and NTFS share in
the network, but just bear in mind the most restrictive permission will be
used, like for example in network share is full control and in NTFS share is
read-only, then the read-only permission will be used, I only mentioned this
if u happen to stumble upon it, and if u put the user in different folders
and use different shares and permissions.
