Hello All,

I am in the process of setting up a 10 or so computer network for a
non-profit organization i volunteer for. We have a w2k advanced server that
I just setup. It has 2 NICs, one with a DSL modem connected to it. The
other I am having problems with. I want this NIC to distribute the
bandwidth and networking services using NAT. I don't really have an idea of
what to do. I want to make it so that each computer in the network gets its
own IP address (DHCP) and be able to use internet services as well as share
files/folders from the server as well as other computers. I need to know
what settings to input into each of the computers on the network, which are
Win98 and Win2k based systems. ANY help would be greatly appreciated! I'd
really need to know what to set on the server as well as the win98/2k
workstations.

check out dslreports.com also, you might consider a linksys or other
router that is inexpensive to
act as your NAT router/default gateway. this way you could let the router do
the authentication to
the cable provider / broadband provider and act as the default gateway for
all the other computers
on your little LAN. all the other computers could then connect via their
Nics and cat5 cable to
the cable router( linksys, netgear etc ). all other computers would be set
to use DHCP and obtain thier
IPs from the router ( the default gateway). the router would act as a NAT
firewall as well.

Here is a link to all the info you need. However I would strongly recommend
that you look into one of the low cost cable/dsl routers from Linksys, etc.
that you can buy for around $39 these days. They are much easier to set up
and have a lot of extra features including basic firewall. If the budget
allows go for a more expensive one that have a true firewall with stateful
packet inspection and outbound port filtering capability built in that would
cost anywhere from $80 to $425 for your needs. --- Steve

My suggestion would be to use IPCOP, available oddly enough for free at
IPCOP.org. Its a Linux based firewall that runs on just about any old
computer (X86 or better (runs fine on my old P-75)). It has a bunch of
things it does;
IPChains based firewall
- Network Address Translation (NAT)
- Analog/ISDN/ADSL modem support
- Support for almost any connection type
- CheckPoint Soft. SecuRemote Support
- DMZ Support
- Web Based GUI Admin & Config System
- Status Display
- Traffic Graphs
- Connection Information
- PPP Settings/Configuration Area
- PPtP ADSL Support
- PPPoE Support
- USB ADSL Firmware Upload
- Modem Configuration Area
- SSH server for Remote Access
- Password Control Area
- HTTP/FTP/HTTPS Web Proxy
- DHCP Server
- Caching DNS
- TCP/UDP Port Forwarding
- External Service Access Control
- DMZ Pinhole support
- Dynamic DNS Support
- Intrusion Detection System (SNORT)
- VPN Support (FreeSWAN) with Control Area
- System Logs
- Web Proxy Logs
- Firewall Logs
- Intrusion Detection System Logs
- Remote Shutdown/Reboot Area
- Integrated JAVA Based SSH Shell Area
- IPCop Linux Updates Area

I know of several NetCafes running along just fine on it. The "External
Service Access Control" is a fancy way of saying I can have a list of sites
I want blocked saving me bandwidth and aggrivation because I don't have to
look at anymore popups (a window may open, but its blank). This is a
freebee that is worth a great deal (The site even gives you permission to
sell it). Buying a computer to run this software on will probably cost you
less than the Linksys, and Beldin firewalls and provide much more power and
flexibility than those product ever could.
