Hugo,

I'm a lot older than 33, I recently got my Network+ and CCNA.

Throw away the practice test. I believe they are a waste of time.

Go to the website and get the exam objectives.
Set a schedule and get your books and go through each objective.
When you are able to define and explain each objective, then move on to the
next one.

*IF* you can find any good practice tests, look for those with fill in the
blanks. I think Sybex has "flash cards" which are fill in the blanks.
(their CCNA book did)

Wow. That must be one of the most disheartening things I've read on
Usenet in a long time.

Hugo, I run a PC information site. At least 3 or 4 times a year I get a
thank-you email from someone telling me about how they taught themselves
about PCs from scratch in their 60s or even later. One gent I believe
said he was 82. These are people who could be your grandparents.

There are thousands of people who, due to the economy, are making career
changes at an advanced age.

33 is not too old to learn about networking. I suspect that you are
falling into the same trap that many people do on this group: you are
trying to learn how to pass a test and not the actual underlying
material. Learn about networking, *then* study for the test. I'd
recommend starting with a general network reference like the one put out
by Zacker. Read through it, even if you do a chapter a week. Then try
studying for the test.

peace,

-*-

33!!!!!, you got to be kidding me, I must be an old fart to be 40 and still
going after certs. Hugo, I had one of my best MCT instructors fail the Net+
the first time he took the exam, and I'm telling you this is one sharp dude
when it comes to networking. He got mad, decided to kick the Net+ exam in
the butt and pass it. To give up at this point in your exam track would be
foolish. We all meet one exam that gives us trouble, look in the MCSE
newsgroups and see how many people fail the 70-216 exam, but they don't give
up. So, get mad and go kick the test in the A$$.

Ok so I agree about what you all are saying.........But even though age may
not be the issue, it can be that society wants certs or diplomas. some are
good test takers. i just am better worker than asked about simple things. i
am doer rather than a tester type thing.
i played drums all my life, but i never wanted to learn the music note way,
it tends to slow me down, the same example come to mind with computers. i do
this for jobs and to get out of the job scenario we all face ( factory and
the soap opera redneck things) yes we all have them in all jobs, but when
you are stuck in a bad job or not a job you like, and want to improve on
what you are GOOD at like computers. but need to take a test to even try to
get an interview and asked what experience you have ( and believe
me.......most people who go to techskills, or techthis or tech that, are not
enough to get someone a freaking job, so you are stuck with certs that cost
you an arm and a leg to buy and then possibly fail if it happens. and get
this maybe you dont get a job. wow that electric bill should of been paid,
but i paid 200 for the net+ and failed it barely. yes it should not be about
whining or being a kid about it, but money is scarce and this is why we do
this to make more money and do what we like. it is like finding a needle in
a haystack. best bet over all is look to jesus and expect a miracle.
by the way i have also been concerned about people who use testkings to
cheat on the certs and walk out with passing scores and get jobs while we
here study and pay top dollar for schools and learn MCP or whatever while
kids are hacking their way to a career. not fair. if you want to know i will
send anyone a sample of what i am talking about.

Quit then.
The rat race has you beat.

Vote Democratic and hope they take more taxes away from me and give it to
you for voting for them.

I thought you needed something to change the path you are going down.

Got another idea Hugo, since you cannot afford to continue trying to pass
the test, apply for, and you should receive some college funds assistance.
Several colleges offer the Cisco certification in their curriculum.
After you get your CCNA, the Network+ is a piece of cake.

Of course, you will face a new problem then: Cisco certifications expire in
three years and you must retest. More $$ and the test will be a newer
version, on new equipment. And the college route may not exist.

Macintosh networking is very relevant. Novell IPX is relevant also.

I hope you are not advocating making the test easier. Or make it easier if
you are a certain age. Or make it easier because you have failed it in the
past too many times. Or give a discount for taking the test so many times.

Hugo, don't worry about the people that cheat to take the test. Don't worry
about the people who cheat when they have someone else take the test for
them. Time will take care of these people.

In my opinion, Network+ is similar to A+. It is a test to demonstrate you
are knowledgable and proficient in all areas as outlined in the objectives
listed for the test.

My best guess is Hugo, you have jumped into a hole you need to work out of.
I guess that the first thing you did was start taking the practice tests to
see what you already knew. You only checked in the book for the answers to
the questions you failed. By this time, you have the questions and answers
memorized, even with freecomptia changing the question and answers position
in the list.

The CCNA isn't that hard. But practice test will not prepare you for the
level of competence I believe they want you to demonstrate in the test.
I believe Cisco wants you to be given a 2500 router, a configuration sheet,
and expects you to configure it for service.

I expect CompTia thinks you should be able to work at a helpdesk, answering
any MS, Apple, or Unix networking problems that come along. Not necessarily
know the answer, but to know enough to work your way to the answer.

A distraction that some have is a family. It is very difficult to do what
you are doing with a family, more likely with kids running around. Set up
your equipment and a study desk in a room you can lock the door.

I must ask a question as I cannot get it from your post: What do YOU think
is your next step?

Steve i am with you 100% why dont you and me talk more on a personal email
basis we can share ideas.

Yes it is hard studying and with kids running in and around the hall it is
nervewrecking. I have a short fuse when it comes to concentration, i mean i
can do 100% far above. i spend alot of time on the computer. i have all
there is to know about everything on certs and more.

I know i can pass i barely passed by cramming in 2 days. i imagine that had
i studied 2 whole weeks i would of passed and saved money, but my schedule
is night shift and alot. my company was considering hiring me for net admin.
but then again i would not want that from these guys. i just need a good
start. i like have only A+ and MCP(210)

Hugo,
I start with a notebook.
I write things down as I see something I don't know.

If you take the practice tests with multiple choice, instead of answering
the question, use your notebook and write down all of the answers. Then
define each answer by writing the explanation down.
Pretend each of the answers is like a fill in the blank. You should know
what each one is. I know some of them are ridiculous, but that's
entertainment. What is really entertaining is when you start discovering
wrong answers on the practice tests you see on the internet. Yes, they are
out there. Even freecomptia. I emailed them but never heard anything back.

I have Network+ and CCNA. I got my CCNA first. I'm studying for my A+.
Ain't that backwards? I'm a Cisco WAN tech, so I'm going down a different
road.

You may be jumping the gun a bit. While it is true that not everyone
can be a (fill in the blank), don't quit before you are sure that you
have taken every reasonable opportunity and approach to achieve your
goal.

You say that you have failed a few too many; have you been sure in
each case that you were well-prepared, or did you get impatient? If
you have test anxiety, you really have to know the stuff when it's
test time, because your anxiety will handicap you.

There's an old saying in track and field about not running to the
tape, run through the tape. If you have to pass a test of multiple
choice questions, prepare by being able to do fill-in-the-blank AND
essay questions on the subject. That's the way university works, or
worked when I was there a few years back.

If you do find that this is not your thing, find your thing, and
pursue it with the same approach. Be prepared...

Hey Mac:

I notice you are Inet+ certified too. I'm getting ready to take that
exam this week. Was it pretty simple?

The i-Net+ exam is the Network+ exam all over again with a sprinkle of HTML
and web.

About the same as the NET+ exam if you study for it.
know your basic ports for Internet use. that's the main difference between
the two. I feel anyway.

What is this all about; what is testking and "cheating"? Am about
ready for NW+ test...

"i have also been concerned about people who use testkings to
cheat on the certs and walk out with passing scores and get jobs while
we
here study and pay top dollar for schools and learn MCP or whatever
while
kids are hacking their way to a career. not fair. "

Thanks..it was cake...I actually only had one or two port questions
and seemed to me to be much easier than Network Plus. I passed with a
822/900.

Thanks
