The live exam is due out soon. I have reviewed the beta exam if you want to
start preparing now.

Thanks for that, Andy. As most all of us know, security is hot these days
and it is likely to continue to have an elevated importance. I think this
will be a worthwhile cert.

Do you know if Sybex will be publishing a Security+ study guide?

I have been busy with the revision of the Sybex CCDA study guide and the
Sybex Microsoft 70-214 security study guide but according to the following
URL, there will be a Sybex Security+ study guide out by January 2003.

Hey Tony

I don't know about Sybex, but Mike Meyers has a Security+ passport coming
out real soon. Buy.com has it listed as 'on order'.

No one has anything bad to say about Mike's A+ books, but regarding his
Network+ passport I've seen a few unfavorable comments that it lacks depth
on some topics. I've never seen that complaint about any Sybex book, so for
early candidates the Sybex Security+ book might be a safer choice.

I hear ya Tony, but I think they are trying to use the passport book when
they really need the All in One. They look at the price and think ... hmmm,
cheaper to get the paperback rather than the hard cover - not realising they
are two different books.
It is the old comparing apples with apples and oranges with oranges thing.

There is a 70-214 book?!
I just went to that BETA exam just a couple of weeks ago?!
Do you have an URL?
How does Sybex know what to write the book about if Microsoft even doesn't
know?

Just curious though...

The 214 book is not released yet (February 2003).

There is a study paper at

http://www.alphageekproductions.com/

It is not a complete guide, but coupled with the Learnkey CBTs should be a
reasonable start.

Hi, I'm one of the primary authors of the Security+ PDF at
alphageekproductions. Thanks for the mention. (Blush :-)

There were 10,000 downloads of the PDF in September alone, and lots of
reports from any army of beta participants that the work definitely
helped them pass. So while anyone out there is waiting for other
study materials to become available, do check out our PDF. :-)
International readers looking for French or Spanish versions of the
freebie, we have those at the alphageekproductions site, too.

We wrote the draft PDF in a week, in between the time the exam
objectives were released, and the time the beta opened, so that people
could start studying as soon as possible. That means the freebie is a
bit unfinished -- it has the typos, omissions and inaccuracies you
might expect from a First Draft of a book.

FYI, if someone likes the PDF and donates at least $20 to us for the
freebie, we'll send you the greatly-expanded, final (non-free) PDF
version of our book when it's ready (days from now). (See details in
the PDF if you want to do this.) It's widely regarded that the
biggest weakness of the PDF was in the area of crypto, because we ran
out of time. We made up for that in the final -- of all domains, the
crypto section garnered the most praise from the reviewers who've seen
it so far. By now, the book has been tech reviewed by dozens
(hundreds?), who've sent us comments and suggestions. Tech editors
are reporting they could find only capItaliZation errors in the latest
draft, and that it tracks the test even better than the freebie did.

If you prefer dead tree volumes to carry around with you, a printed
version of the final PDF will also be available at amazon, under the
InsideScoop (with a test engine) and ExamInsight (no test engine)
names.

Hey Helen

Thank you and Tcat for your efforts - reading the the early draft was enough
to persuade me decide to follow up and study towards Sec+.
