Author OSI 7 layer model in Net+ exam?
Joost

2002-09-24, 4:29 pm

Does anyone know if there will be paid much attention to the OSI 7 layer
model?
I used the Network + CBT CDROMS from Mike Myers, but could find too much
about this, although I have a feeling it will be most important?

Could anyone advice me about this?

I think it is a very good course to study like this!

Regards,
Joost van der Meer
The Netherlands

P.s. Does Mike Meyers still posts / reads this newsgroup?

I would know what devices operate at what layer...IE: Routers/ Network Layer
Hubs/ Physical Layer
Bridges/ Datalink Layer
NIC Cards/ Physical layer
Best of Luck

It is something you should fundamentally understand being that almost
all modern networking is based on the OSI model. You won't be
questioned heavily, but you should at least know what layers fall
above and below each other (use the nursery rhymes) and what devies
operate at some of the layers (NIC-1, switch-2, router-3, etc).

Good luck!

Hey Joost

Count on it. I recently passed mine and I seem to remember about 8 to 12
questions regarding the OSI model. For some reason they do pay attention to
it even though it is not used much in the real world.

Hi Joost-

I post a lot when I'm not on a "book push" - I've got about another month
before I come up for air. But I do count on folks to scan the newsgroups for
me to let me know when something needs my attention.

I'd give you my opinion on my Net+ CBTs, but you already know what I'll say!

Sorry, but I'd have to disagree with it not being used much. You
probably don't see it being discussed much being that knowledge of the
OSI model is considered intrinisc in most networking professionals.
You work with it without using the terminology.

Granted, most people don't deal with specific of the upper layers that
often, but most professionals can tell you what layer UDP, IP, 802.2,
and Ethernet exist on without even thinking about it.

When it comes down to moving on towards advanced topics like switching
and routing you have to understand OSI or the parts just won't fit
together.

Didn't mean to turn the flame engine on there. I'm just trying to
illustrate.

Hey Delbert

Ahhh no problems dood. Where I am all the techs ignore the OSI 7 layer and
pretty much use a formula like in the Mike Meyers books. Or just as
.....Client/Server Hardware, Hardware related Software, Software (as in
applications) and Network Hardware.

yea there is some osi questions on the real test
I just took it on friday i had about 6or 7 question about the osi
so for your test make sure you know what protocol and device work at each
layer
and which protocol is connection and connection-less

There will be questions on the test concerning the above. It may not be the
difference to make you ar break you, but would certianly help your score.

All media operate at the Physical layer. Such as cabling, network cards, or
anything that is physical unintilggent device that you can touch. Hubs and
repeaters are at layer 1. Switches and bridges are at layer 2. Routers are
at Layer 3. If u need any more questions answers give me a buzz.

For the purpose of the exam, Network cards are considered to operate at
the data-link layer although they have physical layer components also.

Hrm, why wouldn't NICs operate at both layers? They operate to 802.x spec,
which does dictate data-link layer procedure, in such ways as media access
control.

As far as the exam goes, the NIC works in the Data Link Layer (LLC/MAC) and
Physical Layer (hardware connections). However, every question I have seen
in regard to the NIC has had it on the Physical layer.

It is ambiguous, but as you would probably expect judging from my last post,
I'm completely convinced that NICs work in both the physical and data-link
layers :-)

Unfortunately CompTIA views the OSI 7 Layer as something important. Most of
the techs I have encountered that run something other than MS don't think
so, and many who do use something like Mike Meyers 4 layer model.

The 4 layer DoD model is specific to TCP/IP and not Mike Meyers.

Hey Andy

Haven't any reference to the DoD one - just going by the Mike Meyers CBT.
Over here your DoD really doesn't have much interest to the locals anyways I
would expect (even if the DoD was at the forefront ... lol). Our tutors try
to keep us to the 7 Layer, but when chatting with system admin people they
usually ignore it.

All physical devices do SOMETHING at the OSI physical layer
The more relevant (as much as OSI is relevant) question for each device =
is: What is the highest layer the device operates at?

I will clarify this to everyone. NICs operate at Layer 1 and Layer 2. If u
get to choose only one answer then choose Layer 2. If u get an option to
choose more than one answer then choose 1 and 2. If i am wrong then i will
eat my hat

Cheers
