Author A Question For All
The MAN

I'm in a Network + class at collage. The professor is try to teach the class
how to configure ip subnets on the third day in class. I'm a correct in
think that this is way outside Network + ? In the text for the class is a 1
paragraph blurb about subnetting. The kicker is he's grading the assignment
due for next week on it.

If you think subnetting is beyond you, drop the class and enroll in the food
service industry.

From what I've seen in my studies so far, every book has more than just
touched on subnetting. Get used to the idea. It must be covered on the
tests.
If you're having trouble, try www.learntosubnet.com .

Russ,

Just out of curiosity... is IPV6 covered on the new Network+ exams? If it
is, I'll definately need to get some more info.

Thanks for the links all. That learn to subnet guy was annoying(need he
spend 5 minutes repeating the previous step?).
I never said I didn't know it or I was having trouble and yes I understand
it is a must know.
I was asking if this is outside the scope of a class that is geared towards
training you to pass Network +.
I've checked everything CompTIA has to offer on the subject and all they say
is that you need to know what a subnet is and what is the default, it never
said anything about creating one.

Actually, on many of the practice tests I have taken I have seen a fair
amount on subnetting. So I would try to absorb as much as you can.

I'd say that you are lucky to have a prof who's teaching more than just
barely enough to pass a test.

Any educator who gives more than he/she has to is a gift, and should
be treated as such. I say this as a former (formal) student, a
life-long (informal) student, as a sometimes teacher/tutor, and as a
parent. It applies both from the standpoint of knowledge/education,
and also the "bottom-line"...$$$.

If you get ripped-off in your education, by yourself, or by your
instructors, you will be the one to pay later. If your instructors are
deficient, do what you can, work harder, ask for help elsewhere, but
get as much out of every educational circumstance as you possibly can.

Personally I beleive that someone who is training students had a
responsibility not only to help them pas their exams, but to actually
EDUCATE them on the subject. I get really annoyed when a tutor glosses over
something because they are short on time or do not understand it themselves.
Luckily I have great tutors where I am and passed A+ after 12 days and Net+
after 10.

You should, at a minimum be able to know how to work out masks based on the
number of required hosts and/or subnets. What you probably won't need for
the exam is knowledge of block addressing.

It is better to study with the intention of learning a skill, than to study
with the intention of passing an exam.

IPv6 will only be covered when it gets fully implemented which i think
is not gonna be anytime too soon... give it a few years...

Thank goodness for that... cuz it looks really difficult to learn!
