Author What a bunch of jerks you STILL are!
Bill Fargo

I have to wonder what it is about Cisco people that makes them such
utter assholes to newbies asking basic questions. People come here for
help but instead are treated to insults for daring to hope someone
here might be kind enough to help them out of a jam.

I first ran into this in 2001 when I came here while studying for my
CCNA. I now teach a CCNA class and thought I'd check it out before
suggesting my students use it as a resource. But, just like back then,
if you need help and ask a beginner'ss question you won't get an
answer, you'll just have half a dozen losers call you stupid.

Grow up. I know, I'm asking too much, but jeez, you must have the most
pathetic lives ever.

Does anybody else find it ironic that on the one hand, you're going around
telling other people to grow up, and on the other hand, you're calling
people 'pathetic' and 'assholes'? You know what they say about those who
live in glass houses....

Look, none of us here on this ng is obligated to help anybody. That's not
our job. If you want to hire one of us as a consultant to answer your
questions, that's one thing. But if you come here expecting free help,
well, you get what you pay for. If you want to post a question, somebody
here might help you out, and others might give you a boorish response. But
hey man, suck it up. That's the price you pay for possibly getting free
help. If you don't like it, fine, don't use the ng. Nobody's holding a gun
to your head.

Bill, there are a lot of moderator and expert wannabe,XXXX them, don't give
a damn about it. Just continue asking if you are in doubt. This is a
newsgroup, if they don't like your question, ask them to XXXX off. That's
what I did, I asked a couple of question, few guys said that I am stupid and
aked me to use google, wat a "duh". I XXXX them, asked them to leave if
they don't like. I can't remember the name coz i don't give damn about it.

Much anger this one has.
They have been helping me. And I ask a LOT of stupid questions.
If someone is rude, the delete button is eay to find.
Maybe you want to hate the ng because your students dont really need you.

Part of being a successful in this business requires the ability to research
and figure out solutions on ones own. With search technologies such as
google it is no longer necessary for people to ask the same basic question
over and over in this forum when the answer could be found in 5 seconds with
a basic search. Perhaps your teaching style rewards laziness but you are not
doing your students any favors and you would better serve them by teaching
them the skills to research on their own before asking others for help. The
easy way out is not always the best way.

And people who ask questions are not generally flamed if it looks like
they have put some thought or effort into it.

Absolutely... thanks for pointing that out Bernie... the questions below,
while very similar, could exact two very different responses, one positive
and the other probably not so... one demonstrates effort on the requestors
part and the other demonstrates a lack thereof...

1. What IOS image should I use if I want to implement IDS on a router?

2. I've looked on CCO but I'm still not sure what image I should use if I
want to implement IDS on a router. Could someone point me in the right
direction?

Totally agree. I'm amazed at the number of lazy individuals who continue to ask questions that can be found with a simple search either at Google or cisco.com. If they can't do research to find the answers, they shouldn't even be in the IT field or trying to get into the IT field. I have never called anyone stupid, but I will tell them to help themselves first before asking others to give them the answers.

Bill, if you aren't teaching your students how to do research, or are not providing the answers to their "basic questions", then you don't deserve to be a teacher. Or is it that you don't know the answers? Got a hint for you: A forum or newsgroup is not exactly a great research tool.

There are many people like me who will tell ng's to do a "google" if they ask a question with an easily found answer. Binary is probably one of the ones I told that to, and that's why he is upset.

I've heard that "those who can't, teach". That doesn't of course apply to all teachers, but as the years pass, I understand more and more why that statement is true in many cases.

Well said forbesl... after further thought, I think some of the problem
could be Bill has a teaching mindset. Teachers are taught that no question
is a stupid question and always provide a quick answer to the student. What
he does not consider is that this NG is not school and we are not teachers,
we are peers. Well, we are supposed to be anyway. He also forgets that there
are rules for participating in NGs and proper netiquette is expected of all
posters. There is such a thing as a stupid question here. The charter states
that people should check the FAQ and search the archives "before" asking a
question. Those who ignore the charter, do no research, and ask a basic
question that is asked weekly should not expect to be treated nicely. The
fact that Bill attempts to defend such actions shows his lack of usenet
"experience." It also shows he never read the charter and probably does not
even know that one exists.

I concur. Bill's a teacher. He gets paid to answer questions, even stupid
ones. That's part of his job, and that's what he gets paid to do. Nobody
is paying us. We don't get paid to answer stupid questions. Like I said
before, hire one of us as a consultant, and we'll be happy to answer all the
stupid questions you want. But if you want to get something for free, well,
you get what you pay for.

Well, he also seems to be under the silly impression that he would be
doing us a favor by referring his students to this group, and that by
not referring them to us he would be "hurting our business" so to
speak. Well, when we don't get paid to help out here, then it stands
to reason that we don't really *need* the business either. I think we
were supposed to feel like "oh my gosh, we could have had all of
Bill's students in here, but we were such short sighted jerks that we
missed out on that gravy train...maybe if we reform the group he will
reconsider..." Silly Bill for thinking we care...

What a load of bullshit! You guys think you're representative of everybody or something, like someone elected yall as a tribal chiefs, no, no, no, you don't stand for me nor do i believe in your opinions, now this fella Bill Fargo might have come to the "wrong" ng but you certainly provide yourselfs as examples of why he considers cisco certs "assholes."

Secondly of all, if i came across a post by somebody making an insanely basic question, uhhmmm....gee...what's a router?....then i wouldn't even waste my time on it, but i certainly wouldn't flame them, cause i don't have time for either!

Now i'm on my way to becoming a ccie and i will get my b.s.e in computer engineering as well, because that's what i like and i'll do everything in my power to make sure i am the best or one of the best at what i do, and some young buck approached me with a ccna q, that show he's done his homework but still confused, i'll explain what they need to know and also where to go if they need more help, not flame them, just because i am a "ccie."

Too bad, i simply don't agree with your p.o.v's gentlemen!

1) I'm not your "pal".

2) Do you mean "street" or "tracks"? Exactly what side of the "street" do you think we're on?

3) Never stated my opinion counted...just put it out there. I don't care if it counts or not. No parading here, unlike you.
