Since a Catalyst 5000 switch is cheaper than a 2950, can it be substituted?
As far as I understand they both run IOS, and a 5000 can be used later for
CCNP stuff.

Any thoughts?

The C5000 is CatOS only. Although the 2950 might be better than nothing for
CCNP prep the CCNP track actually focuses on 3550 multilayer switching.

Unfortunately the 3550 is around $2K.
