"Half-duplex Ethernet operates in a shared collision domain."
True or False?

I would say false, because a device operating in half duplex would by it
nature have it's own collision domain?. But a sample test I am taking stated
that this is true...

The answer is true. Here's why:

When they speak of "half-duplex ethernet", they are talking about a network of computers connected to a hub or group of hubs
(not ethernet switches). Because hubs operate at half-duplex and a computer connected to a hub broadcasts to all other computers connected to that hub, they all share the same collision domain.

Yes, "half-duplex" could mean any computer configured for half-duplex operation, or any single switch port configured for half-duplex. However, combined with "ethernet", they are speaking of a topology, not just a duplex mode.

At first the term shared collision domain seems to be a bit confusing. I
mean a hub or wire is a collision domain and it is shared, and it works at
half duplex only. Switches break up collision domains but they are still
shared in that users in the broadcast domain use them. And switch ports can
be half or full duplex. But after digesting the question the answer is
true. Although the question is posed in a rather lame manner. On the CCNA
exam these questions eat the clock time because you have to disect the
question. It's not just do you know this stuff but can you decipher these
twisted questions quickly. The ones I find frustrating are the ACL
questions. ACLs are pretty straight forward but the questions take the most
time to nail down. For example deny all web access from net A and permit
net B access to telnet net A etc etc. But I ranting now. Good luck.
