Hi Gents, and ladies.

I have a Cisco 1751 router and am using it at home to share my ADSL
connection with my housemate. I pay for the link and I want to give him my
residual bandwidth. Ie if I'm not using the net then I want him to have 100%
of the 512Kb link. When I jump on and start downloading I want it to
throttle him to modem speeds (ie 56Kb max). He's fine with that as he's not
paying anything.

Anyone know how to set this up using the inbuild QoS of IOS? I did have
this setup on a linux router at one stage using iptables and tc (using
HTBs), but the machine is too noisy and I prefer a hardware solution which
takes up less space and isn't dependant on KVM (my linux PC doesn't like
running headless and armless), and I need an excuse to learn IOS

Thanks in advance!

Gavin,

There are many options you can use but some things have to be done
manual if you do not want to use IOS Commands.

1. You can do rate limiting on router using specific IP's or Subnets
but it would be fixed and if you want to change it then you would
probably have to login to router and again change it. If you think
logging to router is tedious then you may write a script to do the
needful.

2. If you have a manageable switch then please create VLAN's and
specify port speed on the Port or you could assign bandwidth on a
particular port 80 and ftp 21. For E.g. You are connected on Port 1 of
the Switch for higher bandwidth and your friend on Port 8(port 8 is
assigned for lowest speed) so whenever you go offline then you can
switch him on port 2 for reasonable bandwidth.

3. Last but not the least is to use a proxy and give him the needful
and when assign whatever is needful.

4. Assigning QoS on Router might take you long and confusing, the best
is to do this and go ahead for speedy deploytation.

Will be happy to hear from you...

Thanx&Regds
