Author EXPERIENCE QUESTION

All,

I'd like some advice please.

I have a job, which I will be at until January 2007 (military). I'll
have my Computer Science degree by September this year. I've worked on
and off on computers for years: I can troubleshoot and build PCs, I
can plan, impliment and manage a network (but the knowledge level is
dated...WIN NT), I'm studying for my CCNA and I've worked with Unix.

I've reached a point where I want to get some hands-on network
experience before I decide my next step (MBA, MSIS, or just
certifications) and also because I don't want to only have entry-level
computer experience when I get out. I've searched for part-time jobs
in networking but they don't seem to exist (at least here in Hawaii).
If I can't find a regular part-time job, I'd have no problem doing
volunteer work...but they don't seem to exist either.

I'm convinced I just not looking in the right places. Any help would
be appreciated and thanks in advance.

How is Scofield Barracks these days?

This will help you more than anything else (I'm assuming it's a BS since
you mention MBA below)

Unix is a great OS to learn. I would highly recommend it.

Hawaii is Hawaii so I'm sure there are limited opportunities. The
problem with networking is that there is almost no entry level jobs.
There are a lot of entry level jobs in the PC and (to some degree)
server level, but not so much in networking.

Your best bet is to get in with your PC/Server skills and make your move
from there.

But there is one angle you need to be aware of. If you have a Secret
clearance, there are a lot of companies that require people with the
clearance. So keep an eye out for that. It's a pretty big ace in the
hole.

I have the same problem as you, and I live in San Diego. I got my AS degree
in networking, got my entry level certs (A+, N+, Security+, CCNA), and I'm
about to finish my B.S. degree in Technical Management. I have done three
different internships (1+ year total) as a computer tech, network tech, and
help desk tech but still no one will hire me with all that. However, if I
had a valuid security clearance in this town I would probably be hired in a
heart beat.

I too have looked to volunteer for a charity or non-profit, but even those
spots are all taken. After I get my BS, do I study CCSP or go for my MBA?
I'd feel pretty foolish if I had an MBA with only fu***** intern experience
on my res, but an MBA is an MBA and it wont expire like Cisco certs do.

I feel the same way. I don't have any idea how a employer would feel
about hiring someone with a MBA or MSIS (I'm finishing up my B.S. in
CIS) with no real job experience. If I go for my MSIS, I'll be able to
help out at the college computer lab, but that's about it.

Thanks for the advice on the clearance issue. I'm already looking into
it and from what I'm hearing, experience might not be important but
I'd hate to put all my eggs in one basket. Right now I'm leaning
toward going for the MSIS, taking your advice about Linux, and
knocking out a couple of certifications when I can. Oh, and I'm
working out of Pearl Harbor (I'm a squid) but Schoffield Barracks is
doing fine :-)

Well, we all can't be perfect!
